Robot vacuum - recommendations?

Mrs_C has decided we need more technology in our lives; and we relish the photo opportunities of the cats riding on one...

 

So, does anyone have one? Would you recommend it? Does it cope with several ponds of cat hair each week? Can it transition from a vinyl floor, over an ali strip, onto the carpet?

 

We're not planning to go cheap, nor do we have bottomless pockets.

I have a EcoVacs one. Have no issues and is clever, not horrifically priced. Though not a demanding user. I had it linked to my assistant to set of 10 minutes after I had told it I was leaving and I would manually move it between upstairs and down every couple of weeks. Never had the self emptying one, never felt it necessary as never had a giant house that needed more than one sweep to fill. You can also swap in a mopping attachment and it seemed to do a good job, but I will confess to being cleaning challenged!

 

All in all, one of my better buys and happy with it. It just disappears into the background. Don't expect to be able to get rid of your normal hoover as it will still be needed for somethings, especially if anyone is a stickler for clean. First few weeks you will be surprised how much is picked up.

Dreame L20 Ultra. Very happy with it and surprised how well the mopping works. The only minor issue I have is a thick dark rug, which it struggles to move over, but it manages thresholds in my house no problem. The self emptying, cleaning and mop pad drying is a real plus.

We've had a Eufy RoboVac X8 since November last year (Black Friday deal!) and it's been great. My partner was very sceptical of them before buying, but fully converted to the robo way now.

 

It supports multiple floor maps, you can set no-go areas, and it's sensible enough not to throw itself down the stairs. When you set up the first map though, make sure there are no floor-level mirrors - otherwise it gets a bit confused and thinks there's a doorway into another realm.

 

You can get self-emptying ones as well - if they're within your budget, I'd recommend it - but no hardship if not. It picks up long human hair fine, but it does get wrapped on the rollers. It comes with a handy tool to cut it off them and that helps remove it all very easily.

 

It manages hard floors with rugs fine, and going across various thresholds and surfaces. The only thing it couldn't do was a 2cm and very steep change in level form hallway to kitchen, so I've just changed the threshold there to a longer ramp-style one which it now manages perfectly fine with.

We've had a Eufy LR30 for a year-ish. It's been fine at traversing between hard-wood, tile and carpet, and will even try to climb the half inch up onto the fireplace hearth somewhat successfully. But it does have a habit of dragging the door mats around behind it. It's lost wifi and needed re-paring a couple of times in the year we've had it, and it's been known to knock it's brushes off on the radiator pipes, at which point it just sits there beeping plaintively until someone fixes it.

 

I liked the idea of self emptying vacuums, but all the ones I could find used disposable bags in the base station, while the non-self-emptying ones just had a washable dust compartment.

Well, it has arrived, and whilst we aren't exactly house proud, we do clean...

Management thought about one with a mop function, but was put off by reports that they smell if not cleaned daily.

I also have an EcoVacs. Works great, never had an issue. It always surprises me how much dust it picks up off my “clean” floor.

 

The mopping function isn’t the best. But to be fair having a toddler with all sorts stuck to my tiles is a challenge for a manual mop!

Switchbot mini Robot Vacuum K10+ 82 excellent bit of kit also has a mopping attachment only place it can't hoover\mop in house is the stairs but there is stair cleaning robot in dev somewhere

It transitions smoothly between different floor types, including carpets and hard floors. I'd suggest looking for one with a strong suction and a good filter to deal with a lot of cat hair. Roomba and Roborock are both great brands to consider. And yes, the cats riding on it are an added bonus!

Thanks for the recommendation! Did you find the cats enjoy the Samsung OLED TV? I looked at one and both my shoes fell off, did you have this issue too?

Eufy is a very reliable brand and they get great reviews! They offer great value especially if you value price over strong suction. They're particularly suitable if you also have smart blinds installed.

Cats won't be riding on ours any time soon. They LOATH it.

 

A robot vac would be my kitty’s nightmare. She’s straight out of the cat flap if anyone gets the vacuum cleaner out.

 

She does like like watching TV though.

One of ours just gives it the eye, the other leaves and sits under a seat in the garden.
