Temporary car insurance

Wonder if anyone has done this or has any ideas?

 

My stepdaughter needs to borrow my car for a few weeks while I’m not using it. She lives elsewhere with her husband so I can’t add her as another driver who lives with me.

 

So effectively I (well, she) need temporary, fully-comp car insurance for about a month. What’s the best way to do this?

There are a few companies that offer short term car insurance. Used one myself many years ago, when my old car was due for renewal before the new car was roadworthy - only needed coverage for a couple of weeks.

 

Gocompare and Compare the market both have options for short term insurance.

Will come back shortly, but a close friend specialised in this market, particularly with startups. I know it is v. expensive if you pro-rata up rate to compare to annual! But cover can be from a few hours, but generally less than a month. What sort of car are we looking at?

I've used Veygo for years for this type of thing. Always been a perfectly legit company and very easy to do.

Have you asked your existing insurer about adding her to your existing policy?

 

I'm on my parents' policy and for a long time my dad was on mine.

 

My dad was mildly upset when having me on his policy made it cheaper because I was a lower risk than him!

 

The first time he added me, it essentially cost the admin fee for changing the policy.

Temporary insurance is notoriously expensive.

 

Just add her to your policy. When you add someone else to your policy you have to give their name date of bith and address etc so the fact she doesn't live with you isn't an issue?

What sort of car are we looking at?

 

 

Just a Kia Picanto, so nice and small. And while I say "Stepdaughter" - she's a woman in her 20s whose family needs two cars for about a month, not a teenager learning to drive - so temporary cover that was more than I pay for a year's cover surprised me when I went looking for myself.

You should be able to add her as a named driver. Talk to your insurers - you could save a packet.

I don't live with my Mum but I'm named on her insurance for everything - cars & motorbikes - so I can take them to MOTs, servicing and to shows. Best thing to do would be to speak to your insurer.

As stated by @Andrew_C, if you can add her to your policy, that is likely to be the best value by far. It might even be value for money to add her to the end of the policy cover period. The inside expert has replied with the following:

 

"temporary car insurance isn’t that well served by price comparison websites yet. 4 weeks will be pretty expensive. Veygo, GoShorty, Cuvva, and Zixty are worth a look."

 

Insurance prices can surprise. My mum had to add my brother to her home insurance as he is living in her house for a fair while. It's led to a refund on the renewal price!

Have you approached your insurance company directly to ask them about options?

 

I know a different scenario but I had 2 cars at one stage, both leases as the new lease car arrived 4 weeks early, both hot hatches. Cost me about £50 to have them both insured at once. I was going to get temp insurance for the lease car.

As suggested by PotNoodleTech, Andrew and Davit, I'm going to see what it would cost to add her as a named driver to my current insurance. I was under the impression everyone had to live at the address the car was normally kept at but I guess not.

Problems arise if you try to insure HER car with you as the principle driver, and her as named, particularly when not at the same address.

Makes sense. My insurer added her to my insurance for the rest of the year, for free. Obviously the right choice.
