Hi peeps,

Ok, it's the time of year at my school where I recreate the new image to roll out over the Summer Hols. (Yes, I am working, :twisted: ).

It's Windows XP with SP2 installed as a base and Office 2003 Pro.

What other software is a definite must have???

I'm looking at installing the 'AUP Click to Accept' stuff, and the 'Stop concurrent Logons' software that is already posted.

The school already uses 'NetOp' and 'WinSuite'.

Should I be putting on a VNC proggy as well just for me and my techy to use? Any sugestions for software / hardware cataloging software?

The software must be free if possible.

I just want an idea of realy useful and good software that is a must install if possible.

Thanks guys,

Simon.

Hi peeps,

Are you using "one image to rule them all"? (if you seen my meaning and pun lol) even if the hardware is different - Am just curious thats all :)

Is is RIS you're using for this?

It's Windows XP with SP2 installed as a base and Office 2003 Pro.

um.... if you're meaning 3rd party tools then I use:

- Adobe Reader 7.0.2 Full (cust)

- QuickTime 6.5.2 (cust)

- Sun Java 1.5.0_02 (cust)

- Spybot - S&D v1.4 (just to protect the LM registry mainly)

- SpywareBlaster v3.4 (cust) - for the above reason too :)

- Was thinking of putting WinRAR on them all but this would allow them to download .rar files of the next that could contain anything - parhaps a discussion for another thread ;)

- Your usual Multimedia apps - like Kudos, etc.

- All the current hotfixes & updates where possible, inc .net framework and windows messenger 5.1 (i know they cant access it here but it's only to avoid security issues I guess)

think a new topic with Essential Software is needed - I'll make one and sticky it later on :D

I'm looking at installing the 'AUP Click to Accept' stuff, and the 'Stop concurrent Logons' software that is already posted.

Both are what I'm gonna try :)

The school already uses 'NetOp' and 'WinSuite'.

Whats Winsuite?

Should I be putting on a VNC proggy as well just for me and my techy to use? Any sugestions for software / hardware cataloging software?

Indeed, I would with a note in the AUP stating that "the computers on the network have remote access technology on them to allow system administrators and IT staff to fix problems remotely...blah...blah" so that they are aware of it (to cover yourself). Maybe could mention that they can be used to monitor a individual following a report of abuse on the system (i'm sure thats justified :))

er....if you have NetOp, why do ya need VNC too?

If you are interested in VNC tho, and want a UltraVNC package that I've created - automated install (tho i havent packaged it yet) - then give me a shout :)

The software must be free if possible.

I just want an idea of realy useful and good software that is a must install if possible.

I'd say that we could leave this to start a new topic (as i mention above) with essential & free software. I'll update the list from PM's / posts received on that thread then :)

Cheers,

Nath

Indeed, I prefer winrar tho :)

But we'll agree that they both kick winzip's ass lol

(....er...right? ;))

PS. see http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=222 for my new thread on essential software - not trying to steal your thunder Simon hehe. I was thinking of putting one there and then you posted this thread lol.

But stuff pertaining to your image we can discuss here right?

*holds out hands ready for a slap*

:S

NetOp!! Expensive. NetSupport Manager is far better and less costly, and you can have as many admin stations as you want!

Anyway, My list would be..

Zust Zip It! (a really simple free zip tool)

StartupCPL (http://www.mlin.net) A better and easier MSconfig tool

Acrobat Reader

Microsoft Anti-Spywear

CD BurnerXP Pro

Firefox

Quicktime

Real Player (spit, spit!)

Regseeker (for when all else fails!)

Java

It's a GUI for students. It basically locks down the screen to your specifications. You give the students access to what software you think they need. Looks good.

WinSuite Info

Cost of licensing. Plain and simple. I'd like a seperate one on my lappy, and I've got to get it cheap (read as free).

@Geoff:

Winrar - hell no. Just a the eval ver will do lol

Maybe I should convert to 7-zip :)

@ninjabeaver:

Winsuite sounds like RM Classmate (we had version II) which was good for the old 98 standalones (and still is lol) but very little point when using GP to its fullest :)

@DB:

Want me to add them to the list in the sticky'ed thread?

Cheers folks,

Perhaps its time to mess around with GP's.

Time to move away from WinSuite. Save the school some more cash.

@Tarquel - tut tut

@Dos_Box Zust Zip It! (a really simple free zip tool)

But bad if you have a lisp.
