FN-GM Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Just a quick poll to see what you are running your site on.
kesomir Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Linux+Apache for an easy life. That said, If IIS was a necessity, from my little tinkering, it seemed easier to get a working IIS+MySQL5+PHP5 on server 2008 than server 2003. Still prefer a nix for web server platform for remote console management though.
kesomir Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Apache on Linux - Ubuntu 6.06; soon to be 8.04. I'm waiting for zimbra to support 8.04. Until that happens, I'm staying with 6.06 on the DMZ server. Debian 4 on the rest

I think once it's time to upgrade to the next Zimbra release that supports Ubuntu 8.04, it will be time to upgrade the other 6.06 servers to 8.04 too.
CyberNerd Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Centos and Apache. We just got a quote for RedHat enterprise - £35 per server for an academic license - so it looks like we'll upgrade to that as the boss likes the idea of support....

Who's the supplier quoting you that price ? Or is that directly from redhat uk.
Grommit Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 It's hosted and backed up free by the hosting company... no work, no worries, no issues... Why do it yourself when it can be done by others..
webman Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 It's hosted and backed up free by the hosting company... no work, no worries, no issues... Control, freedom, not let down by incompetent third parties Why do it yourself when it can be done by others.. Surely you aren't condoning BSF managed services?!?!
CyberNerd Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Who's the supplier quoting you that price ? Or is that directly from redhat uk. Q Associates It's an academic license. We just put a 15k order through them, so they might be being especially nice to us - but I was under the impression RHEL was competitively priced anyway for edu.
Kitkatninja Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 IIS, will also be using Apache from September onwards -ken
john Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Can't beat a nice bit of IIS, my mate said he'd kill it off within 10 minutes of trying to hack and bring it down, he gave over after 2hrs Goes to show how hardened it is if setup right
Grommit Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Control, freedom, not let down by incompetent third parties Surely you aren't condoning BSF managed services?!?! I'm talking about Hosting a web site.. not running it.. we have the freedom to do what we want and store gigs of stuff free.. Don't see why hosting it elsewhere is selling out ?
contink Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Control, freedom, not let down by incompetent third parties Not getting any holiday, time off, stress relief when the server dies at 3am triggering a pager alert so you have to go into an office you can't access to kick the box. Erm.. no thanks... I have a service provider who knows what they're doing and allows me to get on with the other jobs for which I'm already overstretched. Surely you aren't condoning BSF managed services?!?! Managed service does not equate to BSF in all things you know.. remove thy hair trigger response sir..
webman Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 We don't see the point in paying more money to someone to provide a service that we can do ourselves for little extra effort and no cost. Somehow I don't think a web server is high enough up in the priority list to respond to at 3am

kesomir Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 It's free... it comes with your internet connection.. I suggest your webserver requirements and his may be vastly different. EG: runing Zimbra, PHP, SQL, storage size and command line access and scripting for backups.
HodgeHi Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Am i the only one looking to host on an Xserve? Apache on OS X Server will be what's running ours i hope when i get round to sorting out the security and permission requirements and reading up on the MySQL security as well. A lot of work to get done for me.
SteveMC Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 We've switched from Apache on Server 2003 to Apache on a Ubuntu VM. Mainly due to the ease of applying security fixes - a quick 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade' and you're sorted!
webman Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 (edited) It's free... it comes with your internet connection.. That is true. And originally we did use it. But it was slow (PHP, IIS and MySQL on Windows), unreliable, and we had no control (Eg. we weren't allowed to host executable files). Any file permissions that needed to be changed had to be submitted through the DurhamNET helpdesk. In a nutshell, the hosting on offer simply wasn't up to scratch for our needs. Hosting it ourselves - the overhead is very minimal and the flexibility is great. Another bonus is that all our web based stuff (website + others) a) is very quick for internal users, b) doesn't eat unnecessary internet bandwidth, c) can be made available to the outside world and d) we can use web based apps that use AD/LDAP authentication. We can now use as much storage, as much MySQL databases, as many sites, and run whatever applications as we like; it's win-win. Edited July 26, 2008 by webman
