Microsoft Display Adapter Replacements

Hi Everyone,

 

I'm hoping for some help here, I've been tasked with looking at replacements for our Microsoft display adapters and was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions on what would be an Ideal replacement, we basically would like it to be setup the same way the Display adapter is with it being easy to cast to and making sure when displaying videos there is no lag as well. Some pluses would be having Apple devices and Chrome devices being able to cast to the device as well.

ViVi is one that gets banded around. I've not used it myself personally though.

 

We are moving to boards that have the casting built in to avoid this issue.

Whilst we have boards that can Miracast, we've found the Microsoft Display Adapters are much better with video and sound. Absolutely gutted you can't buy them new anymore!

We use Airtame. However - They are quite expensive so have only done a few areas (Heads office/conference/assembly blah blah) but they are extremely good and have central management.

I'm really hoping it's just a rebrand/relaunch of the product as we have been using these for years as standard in all our schools. I bulk purchased some when they went EOL as they were working well.

 

Anecdotally Windows 11 can have difficulty connecting to them. My laptop works fine but colleagues have expressed difficulties - but don't know why?

 

Got two of the j5create models to test - Airtame was too expensive for us.

I've been trialling a couple of Vivi boxes and I have to say they are actually really good. I have been impressed with how they work and they are quite feature rich as well. You can do a lot more than just screen mirroring with them.

Had a play with the j5create JVAW56 (£32) and JVAW76 (£53) today.

 

JVAW56 not really suitable, the default wallpaper is far too confusing and not customisable. The setup SSID and password is clearly visible and I'm sure would lead to people meddling.

 

The JVAW76 is more promising. Mostly because you can customise the wallpaper. Enabling simple instructions ala the microsoft adapters and allowing us to put a white box where the setup SSID is shown to hide the password - need to test if this is "hidden" on a variety of displays / contrasts.

 

Not managed to asssess reliability of the connection yet.

Depends on the quantity, the more you get the lower the price. I think for the 2 units I'm trialling it was around £190 a year per unit. But they are fully featured, there is no extra subs needed.

 

Each unit has the ability to do, screen mirroring of all devices, digital signage, lockdown/emergency alerting, messaging. Then there's loads of bits like being able to send just Videos/PowerPoints to the displays rather than having to share a whole screen. You can also just setup a clock or a timer on the screen without the need of having a device hooked up to it all the time, which is quite handy for exams.

 

I would definitely recommend having a demo or a trial unit to really see what they can do.

We have around 110 classrooms give or take, so almost £21K a year?

We've been using AirServer (the software solution) for years now. Been pretty reliable, and in terms of cost, the best value. Had a quick look at ViVi but very costly by comparison - and we have no need for the extra features at this stage.

Can you connect the USB Touch cable from the TV to the Vivi box, so there is no need to connect the Touch USB cable to the laptop / computer ?

Not something I have tried actually yet but I think they do have USB Passthrough so it could well be possible maybe. I'll try and test it and let you know

Our quote for 130 was a lot less than £21k so maybe check with them

Depending on the equipment already in the classroom you may already be able to do this. On the latest BenQ screens, if using the wireless dongle you can set up P2P Miracast direct to the board, you can even enable touchback. If you'd like to find out more just let me know.
