Performing AV install in house?

In light of this incident how many of you guys perform your own installations?

 

Have you checked you have insurance to cover you in such an event?

 

I would say looking at these photos its a combination of a poor stand design and an inexperienced installer.

 

All the fixing points are at the base of the mount and to make things worse it's even been fitted onto a plasterboard wall. (Absolutely crazy and there's some right cowboys out there!)

 

I'd suggest an audit to check your existing installs, if you can't hang off the mount then it's not safe IMO.

The main fixing points are for bolts down to the floor - which don't appear to have been used. I suspect the straps they have used are supposed to be further up the base unit, to provide a secondary attachment to prevent tipping.

Ah, didn't spot the second photo further down - I thought both straps had been installed at ankle level, but I guess they were installed at top and bottom of pillar then fallen to floor with gravity once it fell over.

We (me and the head of DT) installed a ceiling projector, drilling the mounting kit into the roof etc. But we agreed next time we'd pay an installer to do it as the money saved really isn't worth it compared to the effort the work required (and the potential disaster that could happen if it goes wrong). The most I'll do is wall mount TV's with mounting kits. That said beware the cheapest Amazon mounts, we bought a floor standing mount for a TV stand and it is so flimsy that it flexes
