Staff at the UK's national institute for artificial intelligence (AI) have warned the charity is at risk of collapse, after Technology Secretary Peter Kyle threatened to withdraw its funding.

 

Workers at the Alan Turing Institute raised a series of "serious and escalating concerns" in a whistleblowing complaint submitted to the Charity Commission.

 

The complaint, seen by the BBC, accuses the institute's leadership of misusing public funds, overseeing a "toxic internal culture", and failing to deliver on the charity's mission.

 

A government spokesperson said Kyle "has been clear he wants [the Turing Institute] to deliver real value for money for taxpayers".

 

The Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) spokesperson said the institute "is an independent organisation and has been consulting on changes to refocus its work under its Turing 2.0 strategy".

 

"The changes set out in his letter would do exactly that, giving the Institute a key role in safeguarding our national security and positioning it where the British public expects it to be," they said.

 

It comes after Kyle urged the Turing Institute to focus on defence research and suggested funding would be pulled unless it changed...

He says the US market has always been tough for foreign language films.

 

"It's been limited to coastal New York viewers through art house films," he says.

 

It's partly a language problem.

 

"America is not a culture which has grown up with subtitles or dubbing like Europe has," he points out.

 

But that language hurdle might be easier to clear with a new AI-driven dubbing system.

 

The audio and video of a recent film, Watch the Skies, a Swedish sci-fi film, was fed into a digital tool called DeepEditor.

 

It manipulates the video to make it look like actors are genuinely speaking the language the film is made into...

Nightshade, published in 2023, is a more offensive tool that poisons image data – again, imperceptibly as far as humans are concerned – in a way that encourages an AI model to make an incorrect association, such as learning to link the word “cat” with images of dogs. Developed in collaboration with AI specialist Shopic and currently being tested at Waitrose’s Bracknell store, the device uses AI-based computer vision to automatically recognise items as they are added or removed from the trolley, without the need to scan barcodes, according to a report by The Grocer.

 

The screen displays the updated total of purchases, keeping customers informed about their spending. It also offers personalised promotions and helps customers navigate the store to find specific items.

 

The system shows customers the total number of items in real time on a touchscreen, allowing customers to skip the traditional checkout line entirely and pay directly through the cart’s interface.

 

The move comes after Italian grocery retailer Dimar recently rolled out the technology.

Over the next two years, it’ll be utilized to re-create Welles’ follow-up to Citizen Kane, a chunk of which was lost after studio executives burned the footage.

 

The endeavor marks the tech’s further encroachment onto Hollywood as it eyes the exploitation of AI tools embroiled in controversy over the possibility they were created using copyrighted materials from creators they could eventually displace. CEO Edward Saatchi ultimately envisions Showrunner as the “Netflix of AI” in which users can interact with and make fan fiction-esque versions of the intellectual property they’re watching.

 

“Year by year, the technology is getting closer to prompting entire films with AI,” Saatchi says. “Today, AI can’t sustain a story beyond one short episode” but his company’s technology is a “step toward a scary, strange future of generative storytelling.”...

There’s quite a lot that is disturbing in the article. 

 

This is a really important point. I keep reading how it is responsble for us to teach people how to use AI well and ethically (the policy usually knocked up by AI) but the AI itself is bias, terrible at counting and uses false information.

 

We need to differentiate between a) chatbot trained on garbage b) neural networks designed for high level problem solving.  I feel a gets the credit for b because both are "ai"

Both Van der Velden and Puhm suggested that studios and other media and entertainment companies were quietly embracing AI under the radar, and to expect public announcements about high-profile projects using the technology in the coming months.

 

“We were in a lot of boardrooms around February time, and everyone was like, ‘No, this is nothing. It’s not going to happen’. Then, by May, people were like, ‘We need to do something with you guys.’ When we first launched Tilly, people were like, ‘What’s that?’, and now we’re going to be announcing which agency is going to be representing her in the next few months,” said Van der Velden.

 

The revelation of a possible agent signing for Tilly Norward comes just days after Van der Velden officially announced the creation of Particle6 offshoot Xicoia, an AI talent studio designed to create, manage and monetize a new generation of hyperreal digital stars...
