Olliedawg Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Looking to upgrade our aging on-prem server which hosts 3CX. Currently running on a HP ProLiant DL20 Gen 9 with following spec.. CPU : Intel E3-1220 v6 Memory : 16GB (is 8 enough? usage seems to peak at 6GB) x2 500GB HDD's in raid 1 (storing recordings etc..) x2 240GB SDD's in raid 1 (OS) Was looking at something similar to this : Dell PowerEdge R250 1U Rack Server – ServerSource : Seems to fit the bill pretty well What do you use for your onprem 3CX? Arguments for going cloud-hosted vs onprem?
mavhc Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Unless you're running 10,000 phones, why do you need anything more than a VM on another computer?
Netwacky87 Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 We had a quote for in the cloud at £400 a year. No brainer for me!

Way cheaper than what I was quoted!! - - - Updated - - - Unless you're running 10,000 phones, why do you need anything more than a VM on another computer? I thought it was best to have 3CX running bare-metal on a standalone machine - Correct me if im wrong though!

Shouldn't matter these days, I'm running Freepbx with 2GB ram and 2 cores as a VM. If you were converting between digital and analog phones that may have been a suggestion 1
ThomL Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Pricing directly from the 3cx website: If 24 SC or less they charge £400 a year hosting 1
JDHaves Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 We're running about 100 on-site desksets and equivalent number of App users - all running from an Intel NUC. Overhead on the system isn't high. 1
fiza Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 How do you figure out how many simultaneous calls you need? We are hosted by another company and we are on 64SC. I do wonder if that is too high, we have 321 extensions over 3 sites but the company cannot provide me with any statistics on what the highest number of SC's we have ever used.
mavhc Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Also not as if cloud hosted is bare metal, I'd just move it to a vm/container. I had to install a module for freepbx to monitor simultaneous call usage, very annoying

Watch activity at the start & end of the day - That's when our main call volume is. We have a 16 license with about 100 extensions registered but rarely hit more than 5/6 even at peak.
JDHaves Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Our support compnay suggested a 3:1 ratio would be more than enough (we've increased the number of handsets over the years) .. but the maths is fairly sound. In a school - haw many of those phones are sat with people with on a permanent desk .. how many Admin Staff? In our case, would 60 of them ever be on a call to each other at any one time locking our the system to other callers? We haven't got 60 admin staff sat permanently at desks, so likelyhood of their never being a free line is very low.

We Had 16SC for 13 schools/300 Handsets and the only time we have ever had capacity issues was doing parents evening over the phone in covid - after which we bumped it upto 32SC, the licencing is fairly flexible so if you need to jump up atleast in our case it was pro-rated
CrootUK Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Running 7 3CX Instances here as VM’s works flawlessly, never needed physical hardware for it.
CrootUK Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Anyone running them in failover? We tried it with one, but ended up pulling it. Not so worth while when its sitting on a cluster. 1
