Olliedawg Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Anyone recommend a backup solution for ESXi 8.0 free? Using Veeam Agent at the moment, but would prefer to be able to backup at the VM level if possible. I know the API is blocked on the free licence, looking to avoid paying this if possible, as we dont need vCenter etc..
3s-gtech Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 GhettoVCB? That’s what I used for years with ESXi, backing up to a NFS NAS share.

Davit2005 Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Doesn't Veeam have a free offering I know it is limited but have you looked :-)
Olliedawg Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 Doesn't Veeam have a free offering I know it is limited but have you looked :-) We’re using the free Veeam atm, doing agent level backups . I would rather have a full VM level backup if possible although the free version of ESXi limits the API’s required for backups
Sephiroth Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) Doesn't Veeam have a free offering I know it is limited but have you looked :-) I'm in the same boat with my personal setup. Whilst Veeam does have a free B&R server, unfortunately Veeam B&R (and most VM level backup software) is blocked by VMWare ESXi Free as they want you to pay for vCenter to do proper backups. I suspect that your best bet is to continue with Veeam B&R Free (I assume you are using the Backup and Replication server, rather than manually configuring the agent on each VM?) as long as you have fewer than 10 VMs that need backing up. You end up with the same experience, just with an agent on the VM. Edited October 30, 2023 by Sephiroth

We do actually still have a licence for this for another 180 days as we used to have 3 separate hosts, now down to one running free esxi. Long story short we bought one new server & realised we can consolidate a hell of a lot of vms down & don’t really need 3 physical servers and a SAN. Thats why we’ve opted for a single server with free ESXi. Yea it is a shame the api is blocked on the free version.
