Sonic007 Posted October 10, 2023 Posted October 10, 2023 Hi everyone, If we play music in asembly and project the words on the screen then what sort of license do we need? We will also play music in end of term shows or in classrooms. We sometimes also play youtube music or videos. Would this be covered too? What do you use? PRS, CCLI ? none? Many thanks for your help.
mjhardisty Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Whether this is accurate: https://cefm.co.uk/licensing/school/#:~:text=A%20PRS%20for%20Music%20Licence,music%20composers%2C%20songwriters%20and%20publishers.
Sonic007 Posted November 29, 2023 Author Posted November 29, 2023 I looked into this. We have and are covered by a PRS and PPL license. This is purchased by the DFE for all state schools and academies in the UK. This allows us to play any music in classrooms, PE lessons, assemblies, carol concerts, school performances. We are not allowed to use music from musicals, for example if putting on a performance of Matilda. If we want to put on a musical show or use songs from a musical / or play then we need to buy the music performance rights beforehand.
Andrew_C Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Also consider the Ts&Cs of the platform. Many specifically exclude school use. 1

There has always been mixed messages about this in my experience some people say that a school is licensed to play music for educational purposes some say if it is ina school then it is educational some say "BUT IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN" has anyone got a definitive description - and for videos as well - while we are at it!!

You do need PRS/PPL unless everything is strictly educational, though most schools are probably covered by both. Just because music use happens in the school day does not necessarily make this a curricular usage. For example; playing some background music during a maths class is not required by the maths curriculum and therefore not exempt from copyright law. Lots of info at the site mentioned above https://cefm.co.uk/licensing/ Schools will require a licence if films are shown as part of an entertainment programme. Plus there is the above-mentioned T&Cs of the media/streamer. Strange how people who specialise in educating others seem incapable of grasping things that don't jibe with what they want to do. 1

My problem is that I have been told different things by a lot of people who should know e.g. Head Teachers - including one who had spent many years as a senior educational advisor to the LEA (don;t ask why he was employed as a Head - sort point!!!!) Several other LEA IT advisors said the same thing a lot of which I have found is not true - including license for software that I was using! I just got lost about which bots were rubbish and which bits were true BTW - for the software licenses I got that in writing (well email) - it was still unlicensed (as I found out later) but at least I was covered
LeMarchand Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 a lot of which I have found is not true - including license for software that I was using! Yes, a member of SMT at one of my sites didn't seem to know the difference between renewing an annual (one machine) license and buying a single use license. As we had been using the software for years, we obviously were allowed to use in on computers.
Sonic007 Posted December 5, 2023 Author Posted December 5, 2023 Does anyone here report songs and hymns you have used to the CCLI?
LeMarchand Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Does anyone here report songs and hymns you have used to the CCLI? Probably the same amount of people who list the movies etc shown. 1
