Unable to backup on Windows Server Backup

Hi all,

 

I am attempting to backup my Hyper V machines using a local external SSD drive, however I am receiving an error message “Not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location”. The drive has been formatted so it is completely empty.

 

My Hyper V storage size is 1.3TB and my SSD drive is a 2TB.

 

Am I missing something obvious here?

It's not the destination, it's the source - how big is your system reserved partition?

At the moment there is only a Primary partition which holds most of the space 1.8TB and only 20MB unallocated.

I suspect that's your issue. I think Windows Backup requires a secondary system reserved or recovery partition to operate.

At least 1GB, by default a lot are only 512MB. We learnt this the hard way when trying to backup some older servers so now we make sure that they all have at least a 1GB system reserved volume/partition.

 

Depending on how old the computer is (i.e. BIOS or EUFI) these are the partition/volume sizes we use and we can now successfully use WSB (via SCDPM actually) to backup:

 

BIOS: it's called System Reserved

 

 

 

EUFI: it's called Recovery

Could you assist in how to increase my system reserved partition from 512 MB to 1GB
