We have recently replaced our old Sharp 55" screen with 75" Iiyama screens and have come across a strange issue and could do with bouncing ideas off people.

The Sharp screens, were PC -> Display Port Adapter -> VGA Cable -> Screen and had no issues

The Iiyama Screens are PC -> Display Port Adpater -> HDMI Cable -> Screen and I am having reports where the PC will go from Duplicate/Extend to this screen only, stopping the image from being displayed on the IIyama Screen (untill you go back and change to duplicate/extend)

The HMDI cables are a mixture of 3,5 and 10 metre cables.

The Display Port -> HDMI adapters are unbranded from what I can see and I have even tried Startech 4k Display Port to HDMI adapters.

The computers are HP EliteDesk 800 G2 SFF - with VGA and 2 x DP outputs.

All computers are on Win 10 22H2 with latest updates applied.

I've tried the Display Port adapters in both DP ports and same thing happens.

It happens randomly and can go days without issue.

Staff dont help when I ask them to report things and what they were using/doing when it happened.

So........

Other than buying new Display Port to HMDI Cables to test..... or purchasing a laptop/dock or new PC which has HDMI from source.....

Anyone come across anything like this before, or any ideas I can look at.

Cheers

How long is the HDMI run?

Maximum cable distance is stated at 15.2m from the adapter to the display.. so cable length shouldn't be an issue.

Is it always the same board/s which have this issue?

It happends to the vast majority of the Iiyama screens.

Is the port DP++ or just DP?

If DP++ you should be able to use a passive adaptor

Just checked and they are DP++

So, the PC is connected to a standard monitor via VGA with the Display Port Adapter going to Iiyama screen.

I've been reading so many things now my head is getting confused.....

Some articles say if using dual monitors, then use active and the some articles dont mention anything about needing an active adapter.

Might order some passive adapter to see if that works.

You can buy native DP > HDMI cables - I'd also suggest upgrading graphics drivers beforehand.

Drivers are upto date....

I've seen bandwidth issues with newer screens before, try dropping the refresh rate for the display to 30Hz?

That isnt a bad shout..... will give that a look - not even considered that.

Do you by any chance have issues with closing fullscreen PowerPoints and returning to "normal" on those Iiyamas?

REALLY no need to answer if you're in the middle of headaches there, just curious.

Check PowerPoint.

If you make a ppt full screen before turning the second screen on when you exit the presentation it will disable the secondary screen.

We started having problems when we moved away from VGA connections to projectors and started using HDMI or DisplayPort connections on interactive screens.

Not sure if this is any help, we had similar connection issues with other brands of panel - although we don't use Ilyama. In a few cases we needed to change the EDID or HDMI setting (depending on the menu options) on the panel from either Auto or 2 down to 1.4 - not sure if there's a similar setting on the Ilyama? We also found some makes of panel are very particular with HDMI cable type - generally settled with premium high speed between faceplate and panel.

Just checked and there is a slight difference in the driver versions - latest from intel is showing 31.0.101.2115 (16/11/2022) I had 31.0.101.2111 (19/07/2022)

Teach me to properly check next time - PSWindowsUpdates, normally installs latest drivers which it did for Intel Ports, Realtek Nic, but for some reason not the Graphics drivers.

So just installing drivers - (which has a Fresh Install option)

From I have been told - possibly yes. Trying to get a proper picture out of staff is proving difficult.

I'll send that out to staff to see if anyone replies - but interesting as not come across this before.

Will check on the screens in the morning - hopefully there is setting I can try.

Do your teachers move around? I've had issues with someone's set up being different to the previous user, and shenanigans as you describe occurring.

Some do move, other have been in the same room from AM reg to the problem starts.

Only difference between staff who do move is some have it on duplicate and other prefer extend.

Hopefully I can get more of a idea if and when staff reply to emails in the morning.

It may be worth opening a ticket with Iiyama support. Drivers and firmware aren't the preserve of just computers these days. I'm sure they will want they kit to work with the widest range of end user hardware, so perhaps they can tweak something to make things more reliable/predictable.

Further to peoples mentions about Powerpoint, if when they go to Slideshow and the Show Presenter View is Ticked that is when our screens generally do this (ours are setup on Elitedesk 800G2 with DP to HDMI adaptors as well) so if the user unticks this box it keeps its settings ok and works faultlessly. I tried looking for a GPO to disable this by default but there isnt one so if it is your problem you just need to ask staff to untick that box or else be prepared for the screen to switch modes.

Had a chat with Iiyama the other day about some issues, and I did raise this issue, but did admit I wasnt sure where the issue lay at the time. - It is beginning to look like an Adapter to HDMI issue.

What about swapping the PC monitor and the Iiyama connections round with an VGA to HDMI adapter and use the DP to HDMI on the PC monitor

Could do, as the Monitors support display port - just need to find a suitable adapter to do a test with.

That is very interesting - will email that out to staff and have a look to see if there is a registry entry that can be set via GPO

I think this might reference the one (it's been a long time since I set it, but looking up the reg key brought this reference from Edugeek up): https://www.edugeek.net/forums/office-software/188143-use-presenter-view-powerpoint-2016-disabled-default.html

This only affects newly created PowerPoints from memory - not existing ones, or ones created at home...

Well - I've tried everything possible for the moment and staff still repoting issues.

Going to order DP -> HDMI cable to test - then failing that will be a call to iiyama.

If you can get into a classroom try PowerPoint first before ordering anything or logging tickets. When it clicked with us it suddenly made sense why there were so many issues after we'd moved to HDMI/Displayport connections.

Step 1 login to the PC

Step 2 open x.pptx

Step 3 launch Slideshow

Step 4 switch screen on the wall on

Step 4a Freeze screen

Step 5 exit Slideshow.

If PowerPoint is the problem at this point the PC reverts to PC screen only instead of Duplicate and you have your reason for the screen losing connection.
