Install Paxton Door controllers

We are installing Access Control on a external gate. What's the best fittings to use?

 

Metal gate, I might add.

Still waiting for Paxton to ring me back regarding training but in the mean time, our door controller arrived and i must say, it's easy to set up!! Well on the door that we wanted any way.

 

The fact the maglock and the emergency break glass units were already in place (granted we had to replace one of the break glass units), it took longer to understand how the exisiting connections were wired as it was a right bodge!

 

We found that the maglock and emergency door release units have to be wired in series rather than parrallel and the 0v is to be connected to N.C.

 

Other than that, simples for that door!

 

Now time to move on to the other doors and see what we want to do on those. We have one door where we want general access out but only staff access in and a Push-To-Exit isn't going to cut it so is going to require a bit more thought - all students don't have badges either. At the momrnt we have SmartAir handles which allow for genrsl access out but card access in so something like this from Paxton would be ideal.

 

Anyway, the door we are doing is a small win for sure!

If the door is "Light use" and a single leaf, look at the Paxlock Pro. Otherwise, a electro strike lock for single leaf doors should be able to offer one way access if you cut the spindle short, or just fit a push down handle on one side.

So you want the door to be "automatic" on exit but not entry? Would an IR Alarm sensor wired in the exit button position work maybe?

This may be a thing of the past , but I remember attempting to Sign up to the training and they wouldn’t enroll me cause I wasn’t a sparky or I wasn’t self employed or something along those lines

 

So it turns out Paxton don't like you doing "self installs" as we are technically breaking the law.

 

I'm planning on a meeting with them to find out a bit more about this.

I posted about DIY Paxton installs myself on here (quite a few years ago!) having no Paxton knowledge at all. I've since installed many of these, and the most challenging bit is installing the maglock (getting it lined up correctly and fastened securely) and cabling neatly so it looks like a professional install.

 

If you have some good DIY skills and decent tools (not having the correct tools creates bodgey work in my experience) it shouldn't be a problem. If you have a less important door to do, I'd start with that one as I found my installs improved each time with experience gained.

 

I always take a permanent 12V live/neutral to the to the 'break glass' release, and use the second pole COM/NO connectors to power a small 12v buzzer and just sit it in the back box. That way if it is pressed its very noticeable.

 

On the tools front, all the money you save doing this yourself I think justifies the purchase of some nice drills etc...

Point well made there, the break glass should cut both the positive and negative connection to the maglock when activated.

 

Our preferred model is the STP CP3, two versions exist a normal and a LED / Buzzer version, inside you can adjust the volume of the buzzer or turn it off. Flashes Red as well when pushed. The regular model is about £10 and the LED / Buzzer about £20.

Both independently wired. Buzzer when emergency is pushed.

If you have a spare pole on the break glass, you can take that back to the controller to an input. Then using a trigger and action you can then send yourself, facilities and/or student support if a break glass is used. Very handy as local buzzers etc are all well and good if someone one cares is near the door.

For breakglasses, when we had our Paxton fitted in the new office the breakglasses fitted looked similar to this - https://www.securitysafetyproducts.co.uk/security/call-point-push-buttons/illuminated-door-release-break-glass-button-triple-pole.php and they illuminate and flash red when they have been used so quick to see visually even from some distance if they have been used. I believe there is a buzzer version as well for those that want some noise!

We ended up buying cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/3894475-emergency-break-glass-point-green as we needed that day.

 

It has the red LED on it to show it the "break glass" or plastic in this case has been pushed. There are 3 terminals on the back of the box, 2 positive and one positive / negative. The Pos/Neg one is the LED so provided this with the main 12v and bridged this terminal over to one of the other positive terminals - happy days.
