Looking to invest into some apple products for the school - starting off with 10ipads for the graphics department.

How would you manage these? I currently have no apple products on my network at all. I have heard of Jamf - is this worth it for 10 devices?

Jamf would be the best bet, you can easily add more in the future

but all MDMs will generally cost (even with a small amount of devices)

We got 2 initally before we got a management thing and they never really got used but once we had jamf then they got used

Will take a look thank you. Completely unfamiliar with apple devices in education but shouldn’t be too much of a task!

Its 10x easier if you have an MDM soultion, we tried with 2 ipads without one at first and it just didn't work that well.

Who are you getting your ipads from? We use a company and they also work with Jamf as well

Jamf School for 10 devices would be ~£50/year.

It definitely is worth it, since this will be a proof of concept and you want to set requirements and boundaries from IT's point of view from the beginning.

You don't want to be individually managing iPads any more than you want to be manually installing software on PCs.

Haven’t got as far as that yet, I just know the graphics department are after some iPads, so just preparing myself haha! Can you recommend anywhere to purchase?

I'd get your school signed up to Apple School Manager before doing anything else, as it can take a few days to get approved and going. Once that's done work with a decent supplier that is familiar with schools, KRCS are quite good, they can get the serial numbers registered with your Apple School Manager before delivery. Once you have that and your MDM setup in theory all you have to do is take them out the box and they'll set themselves up (usually).

we use these https://www.wearesync.co.uk but we had to set up ASM first and then they set up jamf for us (we had a engineer come in which we paid for but we had like 70 ipads then and they set up all our profiles)
