Sync desktop to OneDrive...?

In the past I've always told people that the desktop should be used for shortcuts, and not for files and folders, but of course no-one takes any notice. In my current network, desktop folders have never been redirected, so users' desktop files sit on local drives. (It's not a school, and users have individual machines.)

 

Anyway, we're making the switch from personal network folders to OneDrive, and I'm wondering whether to include the option to sync the desktop to OneDrive too. I'm inclined to leave well alone and simply continue to tell users not to use the desktop except for shortcuts and temporary stuff, but what do other people do...?

Why treat it differently, that's just confusing, sync all the things

If you have the authority to do so, why not set the desktops to read-only to prevent people from saving there? If it was up to me, I'd enforce a desktop wallpaper as well.

Onedrive has Known Folder Move, which you can setup various ways ( we do it via Intune).

 

We backup, Desktop, docs, pictures but not downloads.

We use the "sync known folders" option. If you let people save stuff on the desktop, sync it. If you don't sync it, stop people saving stuff there.
