I know what you mean. But he's mostly a gigging writer on other peoples projects/properties, which is the sort of thing you get quietly dropped from if you are problematic, so I'm hopeful that he's not that secretly toxic alpha type.

Animation avoids the problem of your cast aging/dying quite well, plus it's JMS's territory, having works on cartoons before B5 and comics after

Here's a story that may best illustrate why I'm so happy about how the #B5AnimatedMovie came out and what fans have to look forward to. A few weeks ago, I and @boxleitnerbruce met to do an audio commentary for the movie. Bruce had not yet seen the movie, only snippets a few seconds long during the final voice session to do little fixes. When he sat beside me in the recording studio, and no one was around, he leaned over and said, "How is it, really?" with eyes that, like my own, had seen so much disappointment over the years.

 

I said, "Bruce it's the best thing we've done since the original show, hands down." He seemed pleased and hopeful but still cautious. Then they started the playback, and Bruce's jaw hit the floor and stayed there for the entire thing, punctuated by this great big grin of excitement at what he was seeing. He got so caught up in it that he kept forgetting to do the commentary, so if there's a lot of me and only some of Bruce in the final version, my apologies, but that's the reason why. He left that room as happy as I've ever seen him. *That's* what's coming

A week ago, Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski revealed that a new animated film from the franchise was in the works, and now more details are coming to the surface.

 

Babylon 5: The Road Home will continue the story he started in the 1990s, with the log line stating, “Travel across the galaxy with John Sheridan as he unexpectedly finds himself transported through multiple timelines and alternate realities in a quest to find his way back home. Along the way he reunites with some familiar faces, while discovering cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe.”

 

Returning Babylon 5 castmembers include Bruce Boxleitner as John Sheridan, Claudia Christian as Susan Ivanova, Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari, Bill Mumy as Lennier, Tracy Scoggins as Elizabeth Lochley and Patricia Tallman as Lyta Alexander.

 

Straczynski wrote the film and executive produces. Matt Peters, known for Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, directs, with Rick Morales serving as supervising producer. Sam Register is the executive producer on the project.

 

The voice cast also includes Paul Guyet as Zathras and Jeffery Sinclair, Anthony Hansen as Michael Garibaldi, Mara Junot as Reporter and Computer Voice, Phil LaMarr as Dr. Stephen Franklin, Piotr Michael as David Sheridan, Andrew Morgado as G’Kar and Rebecca Riedy as Delenn.

 

Babylon 5 began life as a film that aired on TV in 1993, and the ratings were strong enough that Warners ordered a series that ran five seasons and 110 episodes. Straczynski has continued expanding the story of Babylon 5, a five-mile long space station seen as neutral ground for various alien species to interact amid the backdrop of the threat of war. It spawned multiple feature-length TV films, comics and and novels, as well as the spinoff series, Crusade.

 

Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment are plotting a summer release for the new animated feature.

 

Straczynski has plugged the new film with words such as “raucous,” “heartfelt” and “nonstop,” and called it a “love letter to the fans.”

That said, I am on Twitter a lot (far too much). @6Foot2 being about 1/2 hour ahead of me on B5 news reminds me of those few years when @Arthur did the same but for MS KB / Hotfix / blog articles.

I'm so up for this! An alternate timelines/realities story allows JMS to play in the original sandbox without having to shoehorn something epic and new into the established narrative.

They appear to have been pally for some years now. She was enthusiastic about the possibilities of the B5 reboot a few years ago when news of that surfaced and had said that joe was in constant communication with the cast from the earliest writing stage.

I'm a bit ambivalent towards the B5 though, as I'm not a fan of that style of animation. I'd rather read it as a novel, but will give it a go.

The whole multiverse thing that the MCU has going could have been an influence as well.

Anyone got any thoughts on the HD remasters of B5? Down to £25 at Apple for the complete series, though it would probably cost as much again to pick up the ancillary bits and bobs and +£10 for Crusade.

The remasters are great. You get used to the square aspect ratio and it's a huuge improvement over the digital versions that existed before.

Those were poorly cropped widescreen so you lost a lot of shot and the quality was poor.

 

The remaster fixes that by using the surviving original 4:3 ratio.

They were poorly cropped widescreen only for scenes with cgi. For non cgi scenes widescreen was better and the 4:3 is cropped

Correct, but it certainly spoiled the show. The remaster is much better.
