BJG Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I'm just having an argument with someone about whether cached Exchange mode should be set on or off for wired office machines. Personally I think it's a PITA and causes nothing but problems. WDYT?
nwkeene Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 (edited) We, by default, have it on and it works fine for most users with 'sensible' email habits. We had issues with a user with a lot of delegated accounts with the delegated accounts not updating. So it was turned off for them. Also we had a few users that were delegated on a mailbox that reached 99% of capacity and the size of the resultant OST file made the laptops complain about space issues with the maximum size of OST file reached. Turning off 'cached exchange mode' sorted the issue for them. When they clear the mailbox down, it will improve things even more for them... On a fast wired connection, it should be fine. Outlook takes a bit longer to fire up and display the first page, but we're talking couple of seconds etc. Edited April 4, 2023 by nwkeene grammar 1
ShellfishClive Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I'd turn it on, it seems to make everything faster and stops the Outlook "hang" that seems to randomly appear when loading any new folder. 1
Aprice Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Turning it off (Not Caching) seemed to fix the maximum size issue for a few of our office staff. 1
bald_pig Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I find it causes more trouble than it fixes, so turn it off.
pete Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Off for shared mailboxes or changes don't propogate fast enough with N+1 users moving things around. 1
bknaggs Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I turned it on for office staff and left it off for most teachers. It got rid of all the complaints about Outlook freezing that used to come our way. 1
BJG Posted April 4, 2023 Author Posted April 4, 2023 ...very helpful, thanks. We've agreed to leave it on as the default but turn it off if someone hits a problem. (Shared mailbox in this case.)
DalekSec Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Had issues with devices with only 120GB storage with the cache size, so turned it off
free780 Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Fine if you’ve got 1:1 devices and possibly a retention policy / archive mailboxes. Not good on shared devices unless you have FS Logix deployed.
TechMonkey Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 We have a load of devices chained through VOIP phones and having Cache off causes issues as they are restricted to 100Mb. Other than that I turn it off.
