LeMarchand Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Was helping someone out last night, and they cannot send any mail to a client via their "main" email account with BT as the mail is eventually returned as "unable to reach host". Sending exactly the same mail via Gmail is fine. I looked at the host, which appears to just be a place holder. I'm suspecting that they haven't got DKIM etc set up properly, but then why is only BT affected? The recipient reports that it seems to be only BT that they don't get email from.
sigma Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Is it just that one client, or all their email from their BT account that has the problem?
LeMarchand Posted March 28, 2023 Author Posted March 28, 2023 Just that one client. The client says that other people who contact them via BT have the same problem.
mavhc Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 at one point btinternet didn't have TLS on their SMTP servers, might still be the case 1
LeMarchand Posted March 28, 2023 Author Posted March 28, 2023 We always recommend our customers use encrypted ports (for IMAP, POP or SMTP) using the latest versions of internet Transport Level Security (TLS 1.2 or better), this ensures privacy and integrity in transit to the BT platform. These options can be checked within your email client, depending on which one you use. Once held on the btinternet platform, we use strict standards of security to protect customer data whilst held on our platform. For onward transit to other service provider platforms, we aim to interconnect with those platforms (SMTP transfer) using TLS/opportunistic TLS wherever possible, but not all service providers support this or allow TLS for MTA-MTA interconnection. Sounds like they have it now.
sigma Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Have you checked blacklists with mxtoolbox.com for example? Both the sender and the recipient. I'm not clear if it's the sender not sending or the recipient rejecting. 1
LeMarchand Posted March 28, 2023 Author Posted March 28, 2023 Thanks; have bookmarked that tool. My friend just has a bog standard "personal" BT account, but his client seems to be using Go Daddy and it doesn't look like DMARC is set up, but would this affect incoming mail? Possibly as a result of this they are on a couple of blacklists. Would this mean that BT don't want to "speak" to them?
timbo343 Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Btinternet.com email addresses are a pain. Someone i know owns a website and those members that have a btinternet.com email address are not able to receive emails from this particular domain. Checked all blacklist records and all ok. Gmail to btinternet.com works fine. As I say, btinternet.com are a pain. 2
LeMarchand Posted March 28, 2023 Author Posted March 28, 2023 I'm suspecting the problem is the non-BT end (or that BT is being fussy) as using the MXTool shows all sorts of possible problems. That said, with the possible exception of the DMARC, surely GoDaddy should have all this stuff sorted by default?
andy_b Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Reverse DNS can really through a spanner in the works if not set up and you are mail hosting. 1
mikes Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 We've had problems in the past with reverse DNS and DKIM, that said Schoolcloud which are an entirely external system to us, we've had problems with e-mails going to btinternet addresses via them. I suspect they have some fishy rules set up. We are having trouble with NHS Wales addresses atm, e-mails going into a black hole. I really think e-mail is past its prime tbh considering how important it's getting. 1
