Youtube Filtering

Good Morning,

 

I've had a request through about filtering Youtube videos. Leadership would like us to be able to filter Youtube to only show a pre-defined list of videos that staff approve. They would also like the ability for staff to be able to add the video URLs to the list themselves so that when they are lesson planning they can just quickly add the videos rather than waiting for us in IT to add it to a whitelist.

 

I am currently using Smoothwall but am looking at alternatives as well.

 

Apparently LGFL gave teachers the ability to do this but not sure how, the computing teacher that used to do it used it several years ago now.

 

Any ideas on this would be great

I think this can only be done if you use Google Workspace and have your users sign into their Google Accounts. There are settings in the Google admin console to allow only specific users or even the Google Classrooms teacher group to approve videos. There is also a permission setting to set the level of restrictions such as strict or moderate. This only works if all users are signed into their Google Accounts so students could get around this if they use a browser that isn't signed in with their Google Account.

 

Our firewall also has a youtube setting to also force youtube to be in restricted mode. This will mean most videos will be filtered and they won't be able to watch approved videos until they sign into their Google Account.

Everything apart from allowing teachers to do it themselves is possible with a Smoothwall box.

 

I just add the URLS the teacher's provide to me as soon as I can.

 

We have YouTube open for year 12 and 13 and only for the approved videos in year 7 to 11.

Allowing teachers to do it themselves is possible too - will require some training though Access to editing categories can be given in the user portal.

This has been possible for a long time in Smoothwall using regex, but since a few years there has been a default category called "YouTube Allowed Videos and Playlists".

It is of course fine to create your own category if you want different lists for different ages.

Just press "Advanced" and enter "Video ID filtering".Add the video ID. For example, for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60y64uSkWws, you would add 60y64uSkWws

 

My advice is to use an Excel file, with files for the different filters and a link to the video, so that it is easier to keep track of the different videos and who requested that it be allowed.

Use the RIGHT function and the = sign to get the ID from a URL.

Even restricted mode has millions of non educational videos allowed

I'm having a nightmare trying to setup these policies to get this to work. Is anyone able to share with me the policies they created to make this work?
