TwistedHelixis Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Hi, Recently setup our first batch of iPads for the teachers and used Mosyle as the MDM. One of the teachers has just left and I need to set this iPad up for the new teacher. Problem is during the boot up it is asking for a PIN code and I don't know it. I tried hitting remove lock password & remove restrictions pass from Mosyle, plus a few other options but nothing seems to be getting applied on the iPad. Is there a quick way to reset the iPad?
LeMarchand Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Will it erase the pad? Otherwise, you could fire up iTunes (yeah, I had to install it) connect the pad via USB while holding down the Home button and follow through the "restore" procedure. 1

Does it have a Wi-Fi connection at this point? If not your MDM won't be able to get any messages through. This... or a 'Mac' with AC on it if you have one, I keep our old Mac Mini around for just such occasions. Edited for spelling... Edited March 7, 2023 by Koldov Shocking spelling now forever immortalised by LeMarchand quoting it... 1
LeMarchand Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Does it have a Wi-Fi connection at this point? If not you're MDM won't be able to get any messages through. Forgot that! Apparently you can also use an Ethernet adapter, but my two were a no-go as I suspect it's got to be the officially sanctioned and no doubt expensive Apple one. Whereas iTunes only costs in shame. 1
Koldov Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Or (again if you have a Mac) internet sharing...? http://www.edugeek.net/forums/netbooks-pda-phones/230734-ac2-profile-error.html#post1977772 1
Cazab Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 I would generally restore an iPad if it's being re-allocated to a different staff member. That way no data from the previous staff member has a chance of being on there, and the iPad is cleared an set up as new for the next staff member. 1
TwistedHelixis Posted March 7, 2023 Author Posted March 7, 2023 Managed to workout the passcode with the help from another teacher. Is there anyway of being able to set the passcode from Mosyle manager?
tmoon-mint Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 Managed to workout the passcode with the help from another teacher. Is there anyway of being able to set the passcode from Mosyle manager? Not set them but you can force the user to set a passcode and specify how strong you want it to be. For the ethernet adapter method, last time I had this issue I found that you had to unlock the device to allow the accessory to connect to your device so in the end a DFU mode restore was my only option. As long as you have automated device enrolment setup the iPad will be back up and running in about 10 minutes only issue is any data will be lost.

Think that is the problem, if they set the passcode and then leave I need to do a full iTunes wipe. Would be handy if I could either display the passcode in Mosyle or remotely set it.
JoergBaermann Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 (edited) Select the device, hover over "More" and then "Delete Lock Passcode". The only issue could be if the locked ipad doesn't have any wi-fi and you got restrictions against host and usb pairing enabled under Mosyle's security settings. Holding down Home while booting it up connected to a MAC enrolled and asigned to admin on Mosyle might do the trick there though, just updated and restored one of those that way. Also, why are you people suggesting iTunes? Apple Configurator is what should be used, no? Edited May 17, 2023 by JoergBaermann

LeMarchand Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 My turn for this problem now. Locked 4 iPads that had "disappeared". One has been returned, so I go to Mosyle and change its status. However, as locking the pad seems to disable wireless, this doesn't work. Nor does the old "restore via iTunes". Anyone got any ideas, or who can recommend an Ethernet adapter that will allow the blasted things to connect that way?
PotNoodleTech Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 Got same problem with one ipad here - it's not picking up the wifi so it's not even getting the unlock command - and hey presto you can't add a new wifi connection as.....it's locked!!! Fantastic!!

LeMarchand Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 Surprised the itunes restore doesn't work, what happens when you do that? Looked like it was going to work, but then told me to go away as the pad was locked. Not back there until Weds and will try again, but I did try a couple of times.

Ah okay, usually the only issue I've faced when recovering is after it's refreshed sometimes the iPad is locked to an apple account with find my iphone on. Putting the iPad into recovery mode then connecting it to itunes should work. Don't connect it till you have the recovery symbol appear on the iPad. 1
LeMarchand Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Don't connect it till you have the recovery symbol appear on the iPad. Holding down "Home" without the pad being connected didn't seem to do anything, but I tried disconnecting and reconnecting when the symbol came up. May have been a coincidence, but whilst I got the error message below, it did restore the pad! Just need the other 3 to be returned now...
LeMarchand Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Odd. A couple of the "Lost" ones have been handed in, and were showing as still connected to the Wi-Fi, so disabling "Lost" wasn't a problem.
Jamman960 Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) I’ve found almost any Ethernet dongle works, I think there is a setting to keep the usb port active that you need to set before hand otherwise the usb port is disabled(for data/accessory connections) when locked Edit - it’s called usb restricted mode, more info here: https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/news/145042-what-is-apple-s-usb-restricted-mode-and-how-does-it-work/#:~:text=As%20long%20as%20your%20iPhone,until%20you%20reach%20USB%20Accessories.
