Avid Pro Tools First

Hi does anyone know what I need to do to allow student accounts to run Avid's Pro Tools First (without giving them admin access obviously)?

Can you give students R/W access to that folder only? I think we've had this issue with Cubase too ..... Avid's response was to make students local admin.

Yes I told them (Music Tech Teacher) that but he still wants kids to use it as it's better than other things we have.

Worth trying to add a GPO for Software Restriction Policy, finding the path of the software on the C:\ drive and setting to unrestricted for students?

 

We had problems with Avid Link / Sibelius when we first deployed these to our music room..

It looks like I tried that previously as "Everyone" has full control already (on that folder and subfolders)

 

Also tried unrestricted software restrictions on C:\prog files but still no dice.

+1 , it’s been replaced with a more scaled back version I believe

Suppose a long shot might be to start the program as an administrator, close it, and then see if you can identify any other folder locations that the program modifies via datetimestamps. Do they have a Program Files\Common Files component? Might be somewhere else.

I've never deployed Pro Tools in a Domain Environment. All the machines I've provisioned have been local only w/ a standard user account. Tracking etc over the Network isn't really supported; so if they're still using Home Drives, this may cause another problem down the line.

 

Could you add an 'Elevate w/out prompting' GPO perhaps? (Again, years ago since I've touched Group Policy so these settings may be depreciated!).

 

Pro Tools Intro is the replacement for Pro Tools First. I'm Pro Tools Certified (101); so let me know if you have any other questions about using the software.
