Bev Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 I managed a lot of iPads and have always been able to get an iPad into DFU mode using these instructions. A9 and older devices (iPad other than the ones listed below, iPhone 6s and below, iPhone SE and iPod touch 6 and below) Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable. Hold down both the Home button and Lock button. After 8 seconds, release the Lock button while continuing to hold down the Home button. If the Apple logo appears, the Lock button was held down for too long. Nothing will be displayed on the screen when the device is in DFU mode. If open, iTunes will alert you that a device was detected in recovery mode. If your device shows a screen telling you to connect the device to iTunes, retry these steps. However, I have really struggled with this recently. I've got one today that wont connect to the wifi, having tried everything else I thought I'd do a full reboot from DFU but I can't get it to boot into DFU to save my life. It's an 8th gen iPad, has the process changed? It does have a home button, so I am assuming it still uses this method but I always get the apple logo no matter how long I hold down the lock button.
atcoates Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Have you tried with another cable as well? I've had issues with the odd non-apple lead that won't get the device into DFU mode.
RLR Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 You shouldn't need to hold down both buttons as this will restart the device. Turn the device off. As you plug the USB cable into the device, hold down the home button until it goes into DFU mode.
atcoates Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Just found this as well. Entering DFU Mode NOTE: If you are using a USB-C cable to enter DFU mode, it might not work. If this happens, you need to use the normal USB cable. You can use a normal USB cable and a USB to USB-C adapter. I've always done both buttons for DFU as per this article https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode
Bev Posted December 5, 2022 Author Posted December 5, 2022 Aha, I have started using a USB C cable. I will try a normal cable. Although it won't be an official Apple one as all my apple ones are USB C
Andycat Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 There are some free bits of software that will put an iPad in DFU, I use Tenorshare Reiboot.
