howartp Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 Hi Has anyone had problems with XML file handling when trying to open Linked Documents such as Individual Reports since IE was retired? We have a package/command to repair OfficeClickToRun that resets the file handler to "Office XML Handler" as it then deals with whether an XML is a Word doc or an Excel doc, but it seems to be being re-set to IE, which then causes an error along the lines of "You no longer have permissions to open this linked document, you stupid fool" - which in English means "You're opening an XML file in IE which was retired last year".
David44 Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 Yes, we have this issue. No, we have not found a solution yet. We use RM CC4 and they have an article about how to change the default file associations https://support.rm.com/TechnicalArticle.asp?cref=TEC4120188 It isn't a CC4 solution, it basically boils down to use the 'Set a default association configuration file' group policy setting. I have had a quick look at this but on a test PC, it didn't work and rather than change the program associated with XML files it reset a few other defaults such as web shortcuts which suddenly wanted to open in IE too. It's on my list of things to look at again.
howartp Posted November 28, 2022 Author Posted November 28, 2022 Interestingly we're an RM CC4 school as well so I wonder if it's them/their config resetting it. I'll do more reading.
psydii Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 (edited) Happens to us too. We’ve got a gpo that fixed it for a while, but the issue returned. It seems to happen after an update. We don’t have CC4. Fwiw our gpo fix was the result of a support call to Microsoft about four years ago. Edited November 29, 2022 by psydii
coolhands Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 we don't have cc4 but we've had this on a few users pcs recently. I just change default app settings by file type for xml to 'office xml handler' if it's available, in some cases it isn't and I just choose always open with Word. That works.
David44 Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 (edited) I have just had another look at this today. In our case we were applying the Group Policy setting 'Set a default association configuration file' to two objects (All Stations and a Windows 10 PC object in our case. The Windows 10 PC object was one we created ourselves so this won't be the exact issue in your case, even if you use CC4). Now, XML files opened from SIMS are opened in Office XML Handler which in turn passes it to Word, I assume based on the line The line in our XML file that the [/font]'Set a default association configuration file' points to is below BTW...
