Has anyone here got a heatpump type tumble dryer?

 

If so, do you know if there are any models which don't need a water outlet hose, but have a tank you can empty?

What's the advantage over condensed dryers; is it more efficient?

 

Significantly cheaper to run. Run as a lower heat so less aggressive on clothes. Only downsides are more expensive upfront and drying cycle is longer.

If the air source is internal as opposed to external, presumably that air that is cooled is going to need heating from another source - I guess your central heating? So I wonder if it's quite as efficient as it seems and in fact whilst the energy use of the heat pump dryer may appear lower, it's offset elsewhere. I can't see that the mechanics of a heat pump versus condenser are so different. Now, if they used friction free bearings and had other efficiencies, I get it, but ultimately Newton's Laws of thermodynamics have to apply don't they?

There will be losses, but the heat is all kept within the closed system. Assuming the heat pump runs in the same ballpark as a CH one, you'll turn x amount of heat in the room to 3x amount of heat inside the drier. And that heat is still in the room unless the water is very hot and poured down the drain.

I've had it for a 3 years now but when I purchased mine all of the Samsung dryers had a manual water collector.

From a quick scan, compared to a condenser, payback should be 2-3 years based on Which figures, so you should be saving from now. My condenser (Bosch) has a manual water collector, but has the option of an adapter kit to plug into waste. I've never bothered. Good source of distilled water if you need it!

Was the old a heat pump one? By coincidence, I saw Beko's info pag on this topic and thought it was helpful - https://www.beko.co.uk/lifestyle/benefits-of-a-tumble-dryer-heat-pump. It seems honest about pros and cons.

 

My last one was a heat pump, really liked it, lasted just short of 6 years with a family of 4 and a dog. Could of got motherboard replaced i think but didnt think it was worth it, time for part and engineer to come out - if it was summer i might of thought about it. Ours is located under stairs so ideal for a heat pump dryer. No complaints.

Anyone seen one that can live in a garage? All seem to require 10-32C environment. The garage might be above 10 but I'd certainly not bet a £ching machine on it.

I think in that scenario, best stick to vented or condenser. One point to note, you can get an internal condenser (like this) and hose for under a tenner for a vented. Useful if you have vented already and going through a wall is tricky. Not the most energy efficient, but not sure much you can do on that front.
