steveg Posted November 15, 2022 Posted November 15, 2022 My son has been saving ever since he brought his new gaming pc 2 years ago for a new gpu and it seems prices are finally coming down to a point where they aren't crazy. He has a 1030 at the moment which has seen him through the last couple of years. I'm looking at this https://www.ebuyer.com/1425127-msi-radeon-rx-6650-xt-gaming-x-8gb-graphics-card-rx-6650-xt-gaming-x-8g His budget will go up to £500, but this seems like the best value for money. His monitors are 1080p and no immediate plans to go to 4k. Are prices likely to drop significantly more when the new AMD gpus hit the market next month?
mjhardisty Posted November 16, 2022 Posted November 16, 2022 I think the rule of thumb with GPUs is to pay as much as you can. Seems the 6650 is just better than a GeForce 3060 or equivalent. My daughter has a 1060 which still provides reasonable performance - it all depends on expectation! Intel are also about to introduce the Arc chipset too - whether these will show a competitive price drop I don't know. GPUs are in short supply, and high demand, both for gaming and mining!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 16, 2022 Posted November 16, 2022 The 3060ti is in budget. https://www.box.co.uk/NE6306T019P2-190AD-Palit-GeForce-RTX-3060-Ti-Dual-8GB-LHR-G_3934723.html That should be a pretty massive upgrade for them and it's better than the amd from ebuyer. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3060-Ti-vs-AMD-RX-6650-XT/4090vsm1845690 Admittedly it's £140 more, but it'll last longer on the whole.
Brax Posted November 16, 2022 Posted November 16, 2022 It'll certainly run Roblox at 1000FPS! and Sims 4!
Dos_Box Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 It seesm the newly launched AMD RX 7600 is a paltry $269 which will be the same in GBP I hope. Remember US prices don't have tax added to the list price, which is why they always appear to be cheaper. It may be that this may also force Nvidia to start to reconsider their ridicuous pricing policy. Just a shame it's only an 8GB card. https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/24/23735679/amd-radeon-rx-7600-gpu-rdna3-specs-price-release-launch Saying that, you can get a GTX 1080ti for £200 or less used and 2080ti's for about £300. My RX 580 is starting to show it's age now, so shopping around!

Rogueleeder Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 I got lucky a few months back on a RTX3090 from CEX for about £550. Wasn't used for mining and I can see the 24GB of VRAM lasting a good while. I upgraded from a 3070Ti I also got from CEX because Skyrim textures needed the extra RAM so she's now got that, upgrading my GTX 1070 she inherited. Second Hand GPUs aren't bad if you test them, and luckily CEX has a long return policy for failed goods. 1
PotNoodleTech Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 To be honest I wouldn't waste your sons money on a £500 card - the 1030 is absolute garbage compared to modern cards, so literally anything you buy for even £100 will be MUCH MUCH better. Spend £200-300 on a decent card and your son will be happy as larry I recon!
mrbios Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 (edited) Playing at 1080p a 3060ti or 3060 would last years playing games pretty much maxed out. My son has my old 3060Ti in his, he plays everything maxed out at 1080p. Prior to that he had a 1060 and that struggled in a few more modern games. DLSS helps too. Looking at a members market on a popular forum i frequent, i can see people selling 3080FE for £400, 3070 for £300 and 3060Ti sold back in April for £240. So definitely don't rule out second hand! EDIT: oh the thread is really old didn't notice the OPs date. Edited May 25, 2023 by mrbios

Dos_Box Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 I blame @Dos_Box for the thread necro Pah! That's nothing. I got an alert the other day that someone had necro'd a thread on another forum that I had started. 18 Years ago!!! Not spam either, which was a surprise.
psydii Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Still waiting for something with better cost/performance than the 8GB RX590 I picked up new for £185 in July of 2020. I think we're nearly there... but I'm also trying to keep it well within the power envelope. Perhaps next year.
localzuk Posted May 25, 2023 Posted May 25, 2023 Big problem I have with the 4060 is that it is barely better than the 3060 was. At the moment, it seems like it'd be a waste of money. LTT did a video on it yesterday saying it was now a good price, but there are basically better options.

I think we're nearly there... but I'm also trying to keep it well within the power envelope. Perhaps next year. I picked up a new 8GB RX580 in April 2020 for my sons PC, right at the start of lockdown. They charged me £140, which was a good deal at the time. Then a few days later they sent me another! With lockdown messing up a lot of online sellers it was a genuine mistake and they asked if I'd like to buy that one too, but at a reduced rate to save the faff of returning it. I got it for £115! By the end of the year the RX580 was going for about £300-£350 due to the GPU shortage. I would have sold them, but there wasn't anything else to replace it with!
