Oh totally - if you are happy with on-prem systems - you wouldn't move.

 

But if you are a host of say primary schools and want to get rid of ur servers - this system is great.

This is why we are trialling it - 5 but expanding to 40 primary schools if successful. We have been cloud for some time and use Printix, but the costs (per user) are getting expensive as the Trust grows. Papercut Hive (when licensed for a few years) would be a significant saving for us.

So I work for an MSP - I set up Hive for a trust of 35 primary schools over the last 12 months. Works amazing. It's much better IMO than Printix, but that said - it does have its limitations. if you have users that move around devices etc in a primary environment it can be a little annoying - but I found ways around this - at the end of the day - for me and the 35 sites it worked great and it was a lot cheaper than Printix.

Can I be cheeky and ask what the issues are?

 

I'm already assuming we will have issues with student devices and we are taking out any non Papercut compatible printers.

with the primary-age kids - if they move devices they have to re-click the link in the original welcome email as it adds a token to the user's profile. As our devices are intune we don't have roaming profiles. so moving from device to device is a little tricky. speaking with Papercut we may see an agent on each device to get around that - but that's way off atm.

 

to get around this - we only allow the kids to use Chromebooks which doesn't have this issue. staff use Windows devices and they have 121 devices so no moving around.

 

The only other thing I would say is to watch out for older printers - while they may be able to run Hive, if they are old it runs like a bag of bolts on old devices.

 

Other than that - I don't have any issues with Hive infact for me - I would pick it any day over printix.

We are a full Canon estate and have been trialling UniFLOW Online at one our sites for the past few months. Absolutely love it despite some of the comments I've seen about it in some threads here. Hoping to roll it out to our other schools this year.

our only issue is it is using machines all over the estate to hold print jobs. If that machine gets turned off between sending the job and release/collection, it usually won't print as the data is now on a machine thats off. Can cause issues with people "losing jobs"

Device as in computer or Printer/MFD?
Per MFD/compatible printer.

 

The downside Vs Printix is that you can't really add additional printers - you can only have a max of 5 queues/drivers, so you really have to be strict.

 

Once our trial is finished and we roll out to other schools, we will be removing all other network printers.

Just say prices publicly, keeping prices secret just means more tax funding is being paid to companies

 

Problem is you will have signed the contract agreeing not to discuss prices publicly so you don't want those nasty lawyers sending letters to the school!

I am sure we could just submit a foi request and then publish it. Also why are these companies being so naughty trying to stop people sharing prices. How can a check on price of we can’t talk about it. None disclosed agreement are the work of non competitive business.

 

 

We were looking at hive and told it was a driver per use so that put us off.

Papercut supplies you with the files you need.

 

If you are running intune then you deploy them via that system, or if you are still using local domain then deploy them via GPO.

Does anyone want to talk about these products? I would be keen to know how both products store data if the user prints offsite. Also which has the better security?

I can talk about Printix but we don’t use the Go element. We use the follow me system provided by Kyocera.

 

We link Printix to our own Azure blob so the data is not stored by Printix. We then have an server hosted in Azure that is joined to all networks which allows jobs to be printed from home

Hey all

 

Someone put an update on here - can't find it atm - about Hive only giving you the option to add an extra 5 print Q's - just to add this will be changing - and is expected to increase - it is on the roadmap - but I haven't been advised a release time frame at the moment. Hopefully, it helps someone.
