migration order from ad windows server 2008 to ad windows server 2012

In my organization i have domain network with windows server 2008. i'm planning migration to domain network windows server 2012. my network has: AD, Certificate server,DHCP, WSUS. which order for upgrading? maybe the first, i must upgrade AD? can you give me some guide

The first guidance I would offer is that Windows Server 2012 goes out of support next year, so now is not a good time to upgrade to that platform (https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2021/07/14/know-your-options-for-sql-server-2012-and-windows-server-2012-end-of-support/).

 

I would absolutely start with upgrading AD. The main thing is to understand your network- how many servers do you have? What legacy tech fo you have that may struggle with an upgrade to the domain? What about the domain functional level?

 

Certificate Services are going to need to be treated very carefully but aren’t necessarily difficult per se.

You’ve missed the boat for Server 2012/R2 by about 7 years. Do not go to it, as great a Server OS as 2012 R2 was it is now history.

I’m sceptical of the app really ​​needs server 2012 although domain functional level of 2012 is a genuine requirement for brain dead telephony solutions and similar. Happily brand spanking new Windows OSs can run old domain functional level.

 

If the legacy tech really needs server 2012, then treat it as a leper and run it in a VM, taking the exisiting machine, P2V and remove other services if required.

 

Build a new Server, join to domain, move fsmo roles. Then roll other services across to it as you see fit.
