MDT image/task question

Hello,

I set up MDT to use pxe boot on laptops.

 

My question is do I set up more images or task sequence for different model laptops. or one image and one task sequence for each windows version.

 

I'm trouble that the drivers won't work if only one image/task sequence.

I would use 1 image and a task sequence/selection profile to pick the correct drivers for each model of laptop. Edited July 14, 2022 by tosh74

Drivers can be setup to be selected based on the model of the device, if you read a guide like this it explains the process.

You just have to make sure that the Make and Model are exactly correct in MDT, by doing a WMIC query on the various models you have.

I have the imported drivers in make and model folders then use a variable in the task sequence to match the device to the appropriate folder. Seems to work fine for me. Means I only need a few task sequences listed when I image.

We have MDT/WDS setup to install the drivers needed based off of the make/model of device. Luckily, we mostly only use Dell products, which have a nice CAB file that can be imported into WDS/MDT.

 

We use a single basic Win10 image, that gets updated every once in a while.

 

Each device has its serial number added to the Deployment Workbench Database in the Computers section. This is configured to correctly name the device add it into AD at the correct location.

 

The Task Sequence deals with Domain joining.

 

Applications are assigned to each computer via the Roles and installed via LiteTouch, with Windows Updates set to run after they install.

 

It's all pretty automated, once they have been entered into WDS/MDT. Anything bad goes wrong with the device and we just PXE boot it. Only thing that we haven't been able to automate is Adobe Suite
