Hi all,

Has anyone created a server for installing iPad apps as whenever I configure my iPads with Mosyle, they then all start downloading the apps and throttle the connection resulting in some giving up and half the apps not downloading.

I'm sure I heard about a cache server or something where they can get the apps locally instead?

Anyone done it and know how its done?

Many thanks.

The best MDM's have a "self service" portal where you add apps which are then available to users to download at will, a caching server is designed to save bandwidth on your internet, it caches iOS and App updates but a single copy of either has to be downloaded first.

Shame apple binned the server app and integratred it into macos, and whilst doing so gutted out most the config options.

though if you have a decent amount of macos devices kicking about with caching turned on it may be pretty good

Yeah what I want to do is essentially download all the apps once onto a local device such as a Mac and then all the iPads install apps from there isntead of throttling the Internet bandwidth and getting stuck.

Yeah youre not getting any visibility of the proccess.... you just tell the macs to run the cache service, they tell apple theyre "caches" behind your public ip and when a device behind the same public ip tries to download something apple tell the device to ask for it from the "cache" which they then either download from apple to the cache and then pass to your device or pull it from another cache on the network.

All of the configuration options for Caching Server are part of macOS now...

Not really, you used to be able to control which subnets it serviced and the statistics pane used to be handy to see how well it was working
