I haven't installed Java for an age due to the licensing change. Planning on re-imaging the suite over the hols with the new "thin" image, but still need to run the old Java version of MinecraftEDU. On investigation, it looks like Oracle walked back the lockdown and it seems that certain implementations of 17 (updates to 2024) and 18 (updates to September) are OK if they work, or sticking with 8u 221 and risking potential security problems.

Am I on the right track?

I didn't install java, I just copied the files somewhere and pointed a bat file at that place:

@echo off
cd /d ~dp%0
start \\share\java\bin\javaw.exe -jar Launcher.jar

If it's not installed there's no security problems. Then again if it's not linked to a browser there's probably no security problems anyway

Also there's multiple free versions of Java, Amazon has one

Not 100% convinced by that argument as I have plenty of portable apps that could do serious damage.

However, in case anyone has the same problem, for the old MinecraftEDU you need Java 8 as it seems to need a 32-bit implementation and higher versions are x64 only. Last "free" one seems to be 202. Amazon Corretto doesn't seem to want to play ball with it MCE; didn't try other flavours.
