How does your school / trust remind teachers about students who need coloured paper?

No, not really an IT thing. More me being sympathetic to the plight of an exams officer who's increasingly cheesed off by various staff not remembering when doing assessments in class time.

 

Currently, this is in place at the site:

 

• SENDCO sends around a regular "accomodations for $list_of_students" reminder
  
• Cheatsheet (Bob Smith 7B, Green Paper) in reprographics and other staff-only copier locations
  
• Exams officer reminds staff
  

 

Does your place do anything particularly effective* to solve the "oh, I forgot" staff?

Is it just me or has this coloured paper thing just appeared in the last few years? I don't remember it being a thing before COVID-19?

It’s been a thing with dyslexic and vision-impaired students for many years.

 

Not sure what else you can put in place? Generally the exams officer/ SENCO will email out all access arrangements before an assessment period, and these have to be adhered to (e.g. laptop for exams, enlarged materials, reader or scribe). This should be included in that.

 

If those arrangements are ignored by the teacher running the assessment, they get roasted like a whole chicken.

We have Bromcom, so we have a accessibility built in, but it still requires us to keep separate tracking data available on our intranet too.

Here the SEND team work with the teachers and the admin team. As far as I can tell, this results in teachers either putting in a special paper request for certain exams, or an SEND Team member taking a finished paper and duplicating it onto the correct paper for the student, depending on how busy/organised everybody is being. With Covid absences climbing, there are quite a few more last minute scrambles this year than previously.

 

It probably helps that there is a healthy turnover of staff between the SEND and the Admin teams, and two HoD's started out as LSA's long ago so all involved understand each and the needs of the students well.

 

Dispassionately I would say it is the SEND teams responsibility to check that access arrangements for the students under their watch are made correctly.
