Remote assistance with Quick Assist is changing (office.com)

Microsoft's replaces bundled Quick Assist app with Microsoft Store version - gHacks Tech News

Current version of Quick Assist is being retired next week and you have to download a Store version which requires Admin to install. It seems the current version will simply switch off next week and you will be redirected to the store.

We've not had to use it much since Lockdown ended however it was very handy.

Are there any simple similar apps that don't require admin in case of emergencies? (apart from Teamviewer)

This is a pain. However, can it not be pushed to the clients via EndPoint Manager or side-loaded?

Actually I can see some sense in this change... Quick Assist is a bit of a security weakness (easy-ish to socially engineer remote access)... so by blocking it by default and requiring admin rights to install enterprises have that problem removed.

Only found out last week that they have another version called 'Remote Help' which ties in with intune... trying it out at current to replace Quick Assist

Remote Help: £3.50 per end user per month, and you can't buy per month any more, it needs to be purchased in 12 month blocks.

Think ours comes as a bundle with something else, as i can't see licensing for it anywhere! not in our tenant or MSP!

It’s an add on for MEM/Intune. Very unpopular with ConfigMgr types on twitter. You probably need an intune licence in your tenant to see prices for it.

I would just try deploying the new app via the store through MEM or ConfigMgr.

That's my plan for today, I decommissioned SCCM couple months back fully intune now!

What’s actually different about this? Except having to install manually

That is what I have discovered and power shell does deployment part well. However, new Quick Assist app only runs under local administrator or domain admin login.

Obviously, some kind of "elevated privilege" is needed. Old app used to run fine under standard user context.

Standard user has visibility of new app, it can be pinned onto taskbar, but when clicked, it just disappears into thin air...

event log says:

0x80070057: Cannot create the process for package MicrosoftCorporationII.QuickAssist_2.0.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe because an error was encountered while configuring runtime. [LaunchProcess]

and

0x80070057: Cannot create the Desktop AppX container for package MicrosoftCorporationII.QuickAssist_2.0.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe because an error was encountered configuring the runtime.

Any comments on how to overcome this ? UAC is disabled in local security policy, so no issue with prompts.

...it's got a new icon :noidea:

Ah yes and that!

Regardless of deployment method (power shell or Intune, including Webvew2) this still presents a challenge:

- local administrator can run new Quick Assist

- student user can run new Quick Assist

- teacher user cannot run Quick Assist, it does not respond to mouse click.

Looking like unstable software still, not clear why only some users can run it, and cannot deploy until issues are resolved.

Event log (Application and Services logs>Microsoft>Windows>AppModel-Runtine>Admin):

0x80070057: Cannot create the process for package MicrosoftCorporationII.QuickAssist_2.0.6.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe because an error was encountered while configuring runtime. [LaunchProcess]

Another test today resulting in 50% success. One user can run it, another can not. So why is it that new version is so unreliable ?

Do none of you not use SCCM’s remote tool?

That’s if you are using sccm.

I do but gets interesting when someone has multiple monitors. Quick Assist also can struggle with multiple monitors.

Quick Assist has other advantages too. The SCCM remote tool is pretty good but it assumes that you’re on the same network as the person you’re trying to support. Quick Assist works over the internet and over firewalls which is useful if you’re trying to support a worker who isn’t in the same site as you

Oh,

I’ve never tested it when a user has 2 monitors.

Will be testing this tomorrow in-fact!

What does it exactly do when it knows it have 2?

You have a selection of the screens along the top and can swap between them.

discovered that this is just as good:

C:\Windows\System32\msra.exe /offerra

on local network where it can be controlled with gpo.

Microsoft are releasing Remote Help for Microsoft Education A1 through A5 customers.

https://admin.microsoft.com/Adminportal/Home?ref=MessageCenter/:/messages/MC414475

Message Summary

Updated August 18, 2022: We have updated this message to ensure visibility to impacted organizations. The body of the message has not changed.

Introduction

In mid-to-end of September 2022, we plan to release remote help in Microsoft Endpoint Manager specifically suited for school districts using Microsoft Intune. This secure, cloud-based remote assistance tool includes capabilities to enable group admins to resolve Windows technical issues in real-time with faculty and students using enrolled and unenrolled devices in their school environment.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 88504

When this will happen:

The capability for remote help will be available to organizations as part of their Microsoft 365 A1 for Devices, Microsoft 365 A1 Legacy, Microsoft 365 Education A3, or Microsoft 365 Education A5 subscriptions in mid-to-end of September. Additional add-on licenses are not required. This means that if you have one of the licenses mentioned above, remote help will be provided to you at no additional cost.

How this will affect your organization:

Remote help is not on by default. As an administrator, you will need to use the full Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center experience to enable remote help for your tenant and manage the settings and permissions.

Once you enable remote help, these are the capabilities it provides:

Role-based access control (RBAC) and permissions to define who is authorized to support which user or groups of users.

Elevation to allow group admins to use local administrative privileges to troubleshoot a faculty member's or student's device, or elevation if permissions are required.

Compliance warnings to help protect the school from security risks, alerts are displayed to the group admin if a device is out of compliance and may introduce a security risk to the school.

Reporting to identify recurring issues and potentially suspicious activity.

What you need to do to prepare:

Remote help will be included in your Intune for Education licenses:

Microsoft 365 A1 Legacy

Microsoft 365 A1 for Devices

Microsoft 365 Education A5

Microsoft 365 Education A3
