active desktop using joomla

Has anyone tried to create an active desktop using joomla

 

have a menu to resources on the right side with computer information.

 

perhaps a diffrent screen colour for diffrent groups of users

 

just a thought

i too thinks its a good idea - however how can u get an active desktop to point to a webserver? as far as i know xp will on recognise absolute paths c:\desktop.html or unc paths \\server\share

 

unless im wrong? but ive tried many times to get active desktop to point to http:// without success.

I've been using a webserver to push out our active desktop for years although we use IIS as oppose to Apache (which I presume Joomla users would be using). This is using http:// not UNC

 

The Active Desktop webpage then has links to our Webmail, Moodle, Timetables, Absence lists, Merits & Order marks, and various shared drives.

I can't see that IIS or apache would make a difference to be honest, though. It's still a webserver. There is no reason why it shouldn't work, after all, isn't that part of the idea of Active Desktop's that you could have internet pages from the WWW as part of the desktop.

the fact that i havent got it working makes me think that it does - or maybe something non-standard that i am doing because typing in "http://webSite" isnt something id get wrong.

 

Either way - fantastic news as i simply assumed since i never had success it was impossible haha

When people say

does this mean that their entire active desktop is a web site? Or does it mean that youve utilised a "add/delete item" in the active destop?

 

Ive had success with my backwards interpretation of the active desktop/html but not by pointing my active desktop (as in active dekstop wallpaper setting in GP) to http ://intranet but rather adding an "item" as the http ://intranet

 

Is this how others have it?
