Mikey Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 Hi, We've been dabbling with the SharePoint Services for a few days, and I found the eval SharePoint Portal in our TechNET kit. Excellent stuff if planned properly! What I was wondering, is there anybody here who has it running, and has been making use of it - even better if with the MS CLASS SERVER - and wouldn't mind me having a little poke through it for some ideas? Or maybe even a few screen shots of some key screens. Just want to sponge some ideas - there's not much out there about the Portal - loads about the Services though (being free n' all!). I know VLE is a big topic of conversation here, and Moodle is by far the front runner - it has been with me for a long time. But I am definately liking the feel of this SharePoint. Will be even better when we get our Exchange up to 2003 in the summer. Cheers..
tosca925 Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 We are running Sharepoint Portal as well as Class Server. Its been in place since September and the ICT staff use it all the while to asssign and mark work through CLass Server. Drop me a PM if you wan more detail.
CheeseDog Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Using it here as well with Class server and exchange. Been running for over 18 months now. Not actually running the system it managed by a high school near by. PM me if you want
kingswood Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 We will be moving to Sharepoint this year. I looked at other solutions but couldn't find one as polished or as well integrated with Office or AD. :-)
Netman Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 We will be moving to Sharepoint this year. I looked at other solutions but couldn't find one as polished or as well integrated with Office or AD. :-) I don't think you or the OP will be disappointed. Have attached a screenshot of our sharepoint homepage to give you an idea of what it looks like in action....
NetworkGeezer Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Looks good NetMan but do you allow remote access?
Netman Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Yep - remote access through SSL - works a treat, although I'm waiting (and waiting) for our local exchange to be SDSL enabled, as we are only ADSL at the mo'. ...it's all good baby!!

Pretty much what ours looks like allthough the high school has a dedicated team working on theirs so they've added nicer looking buttons, icons colour schemes etc. We've also got different sections for Staff/Parent/Pupil/Governors access
john Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Looks good, I have played with it on a SBS server, that was nice, now it must be time to start playing on it on a (as my colleague calls it) a Real server!
john Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 A quick question for those who have Sharepoint at there fingers, can you make a calendar on there for say staff only use for minibus booking? We have 5 minibuses, and at present there is 2 pads one at each site with the sites busses on it, but we would like an intranet based solution and I want to use sharepoint, but is that possible say to have 5 calendars on one page (IE a calendar for each bus) that staff can book it out etc and can restrictions be placed to stop people overlapping bookings etc? Thanks! Also if anybody has any more examples of what they have done I would be interested to have a peep if you don't mind for ideas and inspiration for my designs. Thanks!
GrumbleDook Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Have a look at the 30 day trial. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/sharepoint/trial.mspx I am about to create an EduGeek trial, but it will not have the full functionality of Learning Gateway.
john Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Thanks for the link Tony, I think i may just set it up as I have a Technet+ sub so get the full portal thingy with that, so may just give it a whurl and see how I go making my own. As I said previous, I have used it on an SBS server, but it was a pre-made jobby, where as I am starting from new as it were.
GrumbleDook Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 http://edugeek.sharepoint.com is a 30day trial. I have another 4 accounts to give to people to try. PM me and it is on a first come first serve basis. I have no idea how good it will be, but it can be a sandpit for a few weeks until I can persuade someone to host a full build of LG ... (and a full build of Moodle too ... and maybe Joomla ... in fact hopefully one of everything!)
eejit Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 There are still spaces available on this trial I believe. The more on it the better.
