Mouse and Keyboard not working past post

please help

when i turn on a pc the Mouse and Keyboard wont work. it will work in post and bios, but when it gets to the windows xp screen and bar loading across the lights turn off on the keyboard and the mouse doen't move.

ive had this a couple of previous machines and resolved it by puting a new image on the pc.

BUT as it happnes that is on my to do list in summer holidays so i don't have an up to date image.

SO, if anyone has any ideas please help

no its just ps2

The quickest easiest fix would be to use a USB keyboard and mouse.

 

It sounds like windows is not picking up you keyboard and mouse properly in its hardware configuration, this could be because of dodgey drivers or the motherboard may not be reporting the correct information to windows for it to install them. If you can get into windows using USB gear does the standard 101 key keyboard show up with an error in device manager.

 

I think that I would try updating the BIOS and seeing if that makes windows any happier and it that does not work simply using USB gear.

Have you tried another keyboard or mouse? I have had wierd side effects from a dodgy keyboard/mouse in the past.

Try another power supply or another socket on the wall. We have a room in our school and if the plugs get swapped around the exact same thing as this happens.

you must be joking! how can a socket would interfere to a mouse and Keyboard.

 

 

well we have only had this issue when lovely kids happen to mess the USB ports, chuckin in objects, therefore bending the internal pins and creating a short, only until I make sure the pins are straight or those usb ports disconnected, then the mouse and keyboard will work again, this is because they share the COM resources .

had a look and its not conflicting. i did try to uninstall the device but it crashed

 

i did put the old image on from last year also, but this didn't hep, so i don't think it was a corrupt driver

Plug the mouse and keyboard into another PC and see if they work. If they do then it's either a software fault (which you've just put paid to) or something internally on the computer such as (mentioned by someone already) the motherboard.

have tried in another machine they do work so it must be something internally.

as i have restored the machine with the old image so its not a software conflict as i said it was an old image so any software that had been put on in the last year wont be their.

just going to use a USB keybaord and mouse, saves getting a new motherbaord (if it is that)

Right, outside the box (well inside actually) time...

 

Have you opened up the machine in question and looked to check that there's nothing shorting the PS2 connectors internally, either under the MB or on top... I could be something fairly innocuous or more obvious but certainly giving the thing a clean could help.

 

I'd also see if flexing the board gently around the PS2 sockets helps in any way.

 

My guess on this is that it's simply wear and tear caused by some issue like someone ramming the keyboard/mouse plugs in, or bending the whole thing around, pulling on wires, etc...

 

Either way I wouldn't sweat it and just get a USB keyboard and mouse and just be done with it... No sense in wasting your time on something that can be fixed with a work-around.
