Migration of network user folders to OneDrive

We are planning on stage 1 of a project to move network folders to OneDrive.

 

Some very basic research has suggested to migrate using the 'SharePoint migration tool', and then once moved, set 'Files on Demand' via OneDrive GPO (so users files are only downloaded if requested by the user.)

 

so a couple of Q's:

1. There seems to be a potential performance/bandwidth issue if a class of graphics students open 500MB Photoshop files from their OneDrive?
   
2. How do you get the default save/open locations to be Onedrive, hence how do you replace the usual 'Documents' 'Pictures' etc folder shortcuts to point to OneDrive, rather than our current folder redirected network folders e.g. \\domain\users\%username%\pictures

1 - For the workstation Onedrive policy, we set the maximum bandwidth to 85%, and for the Students policy we have it set at 500. So far not had much connectivity issues, but we are on a 1Gb connection, but at least you can adjust the throttle based on GPO policy, so you could increase the limit for those doing photography compared to the rest of the school

 

2 - In GPP we have defined a %OneDriveSync% Environmental variable set with the value "%USERPROFILE%\OneDrive - XXX School" and we create the users folders in there via GPP as they logon.

OneDriveonDemand uses that folder, and we use that variable to define the Documents path in GPO

Thanks for your reply, so you can actually set a bandwidth policy that OneDrive uses? Nice. MS list the .adm existing here - %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive but I cant see that.

 

w.r.t the default folders - is OneDrive - XXX School created by OneDrive itself? a few screenshots of your GP would be really useful if possible? what folders end up in your OneDrive - XXX School folder?

 

I was thinking as it's all cloud The workstation user documents folders would need to redirect to e.g. https://school-my.sharepoint.com/personal/username_com

If you manually sync OneDrive on a computer you’ll see the name of the OneDrive folder it creates in the local C:\users\username folder. You can then use this as a variable in your policy

Workstations to auto sign on. Make sure your running a newer verison of windows for file dehydration / Storage sense.

Known folder move doesnt work when you have folder redirection already enabled.

You can use folder redirection to the above environment variable (%OneDriveSync%).

 

I have a fairly detailed post on this.

I automated the move for all staff and students in about 3 weeks.

We havent bothered with bandwidth capping.

 

One thing to mention is laptops and low power mode

OD client will pause sync if the battery level is low. Staff wont be able to download files - either turn this off or make them aware
