Unifi Switch 24 PoE 250W Failed

After almost 5 years of faultless service, one of my UniFi switches has died.

No warnings, just dropped off the network taking every device connected to it down at the same time. All the port LEDs that were on at the time stayed on, but the main status LED is off. Power cycling it had no effect, but strangely the same port LEDs that were on before remain stuck on, even after disconnecting all the patch cables. The cooling fans also come on low speed at first then spin up to full after about 15 seconds.

 

Pressing the reset button does nothing, even if holding it in for 5 seconds for a factory reset. The status LED remains permanently off.

 

Looking on the forums there have been others with similar issues but I couldn't find a fix.

 

I left it powered off over the weekend but trying it again today its just the same.

 

As it's way out of warranty, the supplier just offered a link to buy a new switch.

 

 

Has anyone had anything similar with a UniFi switch and managed to fix it?

Yeah, if its the original one without the screen (has the blue square circle instead) they have the same built in "power features" as the Toughswitches, as in faily power supplies. They can be replaced with a 3rd party one without too much modification, but it's certainly far easier to replace with something else.

Sounds like it's not booting at all - possibly a failure of the flash memory? One disadvantage of Unifi stuff it seems - the warranty isn't amazing - though think all of the big players have cut the lifetime warranties out now.

I've had one fail, it turned out that the power supply wasn't supplying one of the voltages. 3.3v I think. I binned it after that.

Regardless of the make, it's not unheard of for power supplies to go. I managed to blow up a brand new Cisco PSU in spectacular fashion whilst plugging it in. It made a hell of a bang!

 

If you don't have any spares I would get one. If another breaks and you get caught short with the supply chain issues you might be in trouble!

I found the faulty component.

 

 

It's not part of the PSU but a separate PCB which looks like it is something to do with the PoE side of things as it has a 24V and 48V input on it. Even with this PCB disconnected the switch still behaves in the same way with the same port LEDs on constantly.

 

I think I'll bin it unless anyone wants it for spares? Maybe I'll send it to Big Clive...

You're quite right, that's part of the protection circuit - looks like something's come back down over a port and given it a fright!

Anyway, Big Clive only likes things that he can explode "Oooh, that's exciting!"

If it was a simple repair I might attempt it but having seen the damage, I don't think it's worth the effort without proper equipment.
