That's what makes me hesitant about switching. My email address is about 15 years old and has attracted some spam from data leaks and contacts being harvested etc. I don't want to see spam on a daily basis

 

That isn't as bad as my ordinary Gmail account which is my name with middle initial (separated by dots). It gets hundreds of spam emails a week from people guessing my name (the way you can add or remove dots makes it worse as I also get lots of email for Roberta as well as Robert[emoji33]) The Google spam filters are first rate and catch well over 99% of it but it's still annoying when they slip through.

 

The email is the easiest bit, but I use the calendar lots and the iCloud one isn't feature rich enough for me. Hopeful that Google will introduce a compromise but perhaps I'm getting over optimistic[emoji23]

My plan would be to use the iCloud domain as a relay to private free gmail, so the span shouldn't be an issue if google does the content scanning (even iCloud can tag basic spam based on dmarc, sppf). The only downside I can think is that I'll get google based advertising?

Would that work in scenarios where the originator email domains have strict SPF/ DMARC policies? Gmail may see the emails coming from apple and not the original sender and drop them as spammers

I'm also going to be affected by this. I'm holding out to see what Google actually decide to do for non-businesses affected by this. I have 2 domains with one real user on each.

 

My plan for email delivery moving forward is this: https://blog.cloudflare.com/migrating-to-cloudflare-email-routing/ as my domains are hosted on Cloudflare anyway. Seems simpler than using another email service but don't know how outbound emails will work yet.

Im not knowledgeable enough on google consumer to say how it will handle it, but i would say its still the owner of the domains spf and dmarc that is important. Certainly thoroughly test as a quick test may be misleading.

Looks like a decent solution and I’m a fan of cloudflare.

 

Might be an issue if someone shares documents via google with your custom domain though - you’ll be trying to access the share with your gmail account.

While Google’s free legacy G Suite accounts might be getting the short end of the stick, it turns out that isn’t actually the end of Google’s free Workspace plans. The company has just debuted a new Essentials Starter plan for Google Workspace — no credit card required, no “trial” period. There’s just one (admittedly, pretty major) catch: You have to supply your own email address, and it doesn’t offer access to Gmail.

 

For those paying attention at home, that means it isn’t a full-fat Google Workspace package like all of the other options. But if you’re part of a team that uses an Exchange Server or other internal- or server-hosted email options, this could be very attractive, providing 15 GB of storage and access to Drive and its various productivity tools (Docs, Sheets, Slides) as well as Duo and Chat, and Microsoft Outlook plugins for all the expected bits. I just created an account with my custom domain.

 

You need to have an existing email account for verification though

I vaguely recall people having issues with it not allowing you to use your own DNS provider and it had to be godaddy. I have a comercial tenant and I've just added a few Business Basic licenses which I thought were reasonable at £3.80.

 

just finished all my migrations, moved MX record and did a google takeout of all the data for good measure. Nice to be able to do the day job without faff of change request :-)

I created a free outlook live account with my custom email and then verify the email and then it just worked! It might not be supported anymore.

 

I think you can change it in your Microsoft profile page

I just opted for the business standard (3 users) account for Google as I will be ditching my Dropbox storage I Pay for so in the end I will only be paying a bit more. Once I started the process it informed me it was free until September, half price for a full year after that, then resumes the normal price.

It was just shy of £9 per user at full price with 2TB storage each. I pay a chunk for Dropbox so moving my storage across only means I will be paying a bit more a month. There is a £4 per user per month option with 30gb rather than the standard 15gb but I'm not sure about a deal on that, it might have said you can have it free until July or something. If you go to your console and look at upgrading your subscription it will give you all the info before you commit.

 

I looked at the MS offering but I wanted more storage and I have a lot of stuff tied to my google accounts now, so eventually not cheap less hassle for me, for now.

I am still kind of waiting ( I expect till 1st May)but planning on moving the Fastmail for my personal domain and giving each family member the option for the basic or standard plan. I am currently a 1Password subscriber and there can get 25% off. I just like the idea more and more of having my domain email away from google. Of course I still have my own Gmail address for google stuff that I have used for all my app purchases etc so moving to another provider does not affect me too much. I have also checked with family and I think only one person may suffer from loss of apps from purchases.

I signed up to Business Starter.

 

It is currently free until Sept 2022, then £2.30 (50% off) per user per month for a year.

Then in Sept 2023 it goes up to full price, £4.60 per user per month.

Includes 30GB of storage per user.

 

The T's and C's state there is no minimum contract length so can leave at any point.

 

That gives me plenty of time to work out what I'm going to do, and see what other email hosts are offering by then.

 

Note that this offer is only available if you choose to upgrade yourself through the admin pages online. If you ring (why would you?) or if you wait until you are automatically upgraded on the 1st July, you will pay full price from 1st July.
