TwistedHelixis Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) Last week we had SKY fiber to the house installed, but have an odd issue. Some apps on my phone (only some) now take an age to open, sometimes over a minute. Other apps and browsing the internet are lightning fast. For the slow apps, if I disable the WiFi and go 4G they run as normal. I have done a band scan and the neighbours are not using the same channels. I did notice more than one SSID listed for both 2.4 & 5GHZ on the same band, but realised those are the SKY TV box's in my house. I have tested separating out the 2.4 & 5GHZ SSIDs so they have different SSID names, but the apps still run slow when I connect to either. I have also disabled the SKY parental filter, but that doesn't help. Anyone else have this issue, or any idea how to fix it? Edited December 26, 2021 by TwistedHelixis
TwistedHelixis Posted December 26, 2021 Author Posted December 26, 2021 Also noticed that the new Oculus Quest 2 does not connect through our SKY system, it connects but says no internet. It does work when hotspot through his phone. Sounds like a dns problem to me. Ill see if I can get any info from the Sky router about DNS
ChrisC Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 I would echo it being DNS. It you manually set DNS on your device to cloudflare/Google does it have the same behaviour?
bknaggs Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 I had big enough DHCP problems with Sky and their router that I ended up putting a Pi running a DHCP server in place. Check if your devices are picking up correct IP addresses.
ZeroHour Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 Sky have a *feature* that used to redirect any unencrypted DNS traffic to the router/their own servers regardless of client setting *to protect the piracy/Kids* from getting access to things sky blocks. There was an outcry a few years ago about it and if you complained enough sky would disable it on your router with a firmware upgrade but I dont know if its still the case now.
XiJ Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 As above I read Sky at least ‘prefer’ you to use their own DNS. I currently prefer 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.3 for the kids)
ZeroHour Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 You can confirm the dns is not being messed with by using: https://www.dnsleaktest.com I dont have the issue but I did get sky to revert it on my router and I dont know if they continued with the plan. Virgin was also looking at doing the same thing router level as well.
newpersn Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 (edited) Been with Sky for years and found there dns shocking at the best of time. During lockdown when working from home, I would have random issues with websites taking ages to load or Teamviewer decided to not work. Even the edugeek app on the phone refuses to open sometimes. I changed my laptop DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and all my problems were fixed. I think the most of devices that are connected use one or other as the DNS server rather then Sky. I should really sort out the PI to do something.... Edited December 26, 2021 by newpersn
garbage46 Posted December 27, 2021 Posted December 27, 2021 I recently moved house, signed up to Sky and had a new fibre line installed straight into my home office. For a week or two some apps on my android phone would not work, others would work but very slowly. For example I could only access my Nest thermostat over 4g (WiFi off). I tried everything my tiny brain could think of; changing WiFi channels, 2.4GHz only, 5 GHz only. Speed tests would with be 150MB or 0. Hard wired PC was fine. One day I just did the old turn it off turn it in again and everything has been closed to perfect from then on. Conclusion: Probably some messed up IP or DNS cache on the router Problem free for over two months now just those first 7-10 days.
Jcx500 Posted December 28, 2021 Posted December 28, 2021 Had a fair few issues with my sky box when I was with them. Ended up using dhcp / dns on a windows box and used Google’s dns as forwarders
TwistedHelixis Posted December 28, 2021 Author Posted December 28, 2021 Worked out it's actually something to do with IPv6 pre lookup, when I disable this "Enable ULA Router Prefix Advertisements" in the IPv6 section everything works fine.
