How much power does your school consume?

we moved to a new power provider, and now have access to our power history logs for every 30 minitue period every day. Graphs wouldn't work when i tried it today but was able to make my own in excel from the downloadable csv file.

 

interesting thing i found out is that our school consumes approx 800KWh on a day when not 1 single person is in the school and peaks at 1600KWh on a normal school day......

or £68 and £145ish a day

 

Im not 100% sure if this includes the swimming pool/sports facilities which could bump things up

 

anyone else have access to similar data? whats it like for your school?

No, although it's a damn good idea - we have an annual environment day, which involves going around turning lights off and such. It'd be good to have some figures about how much power we use on an average day so the pupils can compare with a "power saving" day.

I don't have the figures on me, but I'll ask about them tomorrow as we do have them somewhere.

 

We have done a number of things in school to reduce energy consumption, such as putting lights on motion sensors in class rooms, ensuring all suite computers are switched off at the mains at night, replaced inefficient boilers with new, more efficient units, turned off a third of radiators, etc...

 

Dunno how much it's saved us yet though.

We have similar stats available. Our Site Manager is off sick at the moment so I can't find out the figures but I know he has saved an enormous amount by cutting out wastage.

 

We do our bit by shutting down all computers remotely at the end of school and will be putting in 100 low power PCs this Summer.

 

Not sure how switching off a third of radiators would help. Turning down the room thermostats would be more effective I would have thought.

Energy Survey | Carbon Trust

 

We have had a free survey carried out by the above government funded organisation last week. They will provide us with an energy rating, how much energy we are likely to use and a list of strategies we can put in place to save energy.

 

The guy was with the Premises Manager (Caretaker) all day and will get the report to us in the next couple of weeks.

Our heating system is set up in about 6 zones. All of which are controlled by a single thermostat. So, even if a room is at 1000 degrees, the heating will still merrily pump away so long as the thermostat is at a temp lower than the preset.

 

Turning off a third of the radiators, therefore, reduces the number that need hot water. Lowering the overall cost of putting the heating on in school.

It would be good to have a real-time monitor that could be displayed in each classroom so the kids could nag the teachers to turn things off. Our school Eco-Team go around the classrooms and give the teachers merit stickers for turning off their projectors.
