We currently use Mosyle MDM for classroom iPads but now we are getting more ipads, some for staff and the some for classroom use.

The staff iPads will be standalone i.e. not managed by Mosyle but who knows at a later date they might be so my question is could I get the staff iPads added to Apple School Manager via DEP but not add them to Mosyle yet then if needs be add them to Mosyle and start managing them?

I understand that if an iPad is used as standalone I need a Mac to add them to Mosyle but as we don't have a Mac I thought I would ask here to save any problems in the future.

Thanks.

Why are you not managing them? Get them added will save the hassle later on.

The HT wants them standalone so staff can use them as personal devices.

Personally I would go for it... Once added to DEP and in ASM, get them into your MDM.

We have Meraki here but I have a network with zero restrictions or profiles and the teacher ones are added to that.

So, the iPads are 'managed', but not 'managed' if you see what I mean...

EDIT: The teachers have no clue and it doesn't stop them using them as 'personal' devices, but I do have some control over them.

Makes sense. Thanks.

I would add them to Mosyle in a shared cart with no restrictions, then they are protected at least

You can go down the route of GDPR, if the devices are lost with student data / photos on you can't remotely disable or wipe them. Unless they take them when they leave employment these are not personal devices and shouldn't be treated that way.

Or make something up about compatibility with the network, certificates or something!

Let them use them as "personal" devices but still have them managed, they belong to the organisation, if they get lost with data one at least you can cover your back by disabling or wiping them. Need to enforce things like pin just to cover your backs, you wouldn't leave your computers wide open.

I’ll run it by the HT but I’m sure he will object to the annual fee of having them on the MDM. However that said I like the idea of having the some control over the iPads and I know in the long run it will be better.

There's always the free version, we managed thousands of iPads on that!

get them managed, i went down your root and now its a bloody nightmare when they forget the apple id etc

just enrole them and you can find them and reset pin codes

Any annual fee is peanuts compared to a potential GDPR fine for having an ipad stolen with data on it.

Our school teachers ipads are managed (ASM and meraki MDM) but Teachers have freedom to add any app they want etc but I can wipe them and lock them if they report them missing
