Hi all,

 

I am trying to diagnose an issue with a piece of software on one of our servers and the developer has said the server must have 1 CPU, 4 Cores.

 

I originally set the server up with 4 virtual processors but apparently this could be causing some of the slowdown we are seeing. Is it possible to allocate cores, rather than sockets, to a Hyper-V server?

Yes. There are two boxes in the settings - one allocates cores, the other processors. I often do a split (e.g. 2/2), but you're better off tending towards cores/threads to allow Hyper-V to allocate resources properly. You shouldn't allocate 4 single thread CPUs.

I have checked and checked and checked under settings but cannot find that option anywhere! Could you guide me to it? Have expanded the processor section but absolutely nowhere to allocate cores.

There's no difference in a hypervisor, and barely any difference on a physical machine, the developer doesn't know what they're talking about. What's the program?

Oh, don't get me wrong I agree entirely!!! Just trying to complete their reuest so we can get the call escalated.

 

Software is Biostore (Fastrak). Issue we have having is that when ParentPay downloads occur (every 10 mins by default) the tills lock up for a short while (between seconds and a minute or so - I suspect depending on number of payments being downloaded). They say we are the only school experiencing this but I dont believe this will be the case.

Wierdly i was called up yesterday saying are there internet issues cause the tills were playing up its biostore and impact & parent Pay & Cloud School here... not ever been an issue before and as i was off site i didnt look further not heard anything today

Don't know what I'm talking about (very, very basic Hyper-V user), but as the OP says these are the only other settings I can see for Processors/Sockets (nothing about cores), is it a terminology thing?

Virtual Processors don't directly map to the physical hardware, so the request is basically not possible. Assigning 4 vCPUs to a VM is saying "the VM can make use of 4 cores". That's all, Windows just presents it as 4 CPUs in its system, as that's how they are presented - but there's no difference practically between 4 vCPUs and 1 CPU with 4 cores. As far as I know Hyper-V doesn't allow you to specify cores directly, though VMWare does I think.
