Davit2005 Posted September 28, 2021 Posted September 28, 2021 Will be my first, completed a few 20 mile runs in training. Lost a bit of pace since had the covid symptoms in April 2020 so it is going to be a struggle. Got the Hydration pack and gels sorted out. Maybe a wet one by the looks of it :-( but at least not too hot if I start early in the morning. I'm doing the Virtual marathon which can take around my local area, got a route down a canal tow path and maybe finish off in the town and crawl home or get a taxi home to a nice cool beer (or 2) once hydrated. Speaking about the Virtual marathon they have not released the official app yet and cutting it a bit fine.
Davit2005 Posted September 30, 2021 Author Posted September 30, 2021 Virtual App released late Tuesday night. It gives option to do a practice 5k to test the app out. Seemed to work OK however when I done the practice 5k the distance was shorter on the app. I'm going to be going the distance by my Garmin watch on the actual day as unlocking the phone and checking the distance is going to be a pain, it does do audio however I've never run with headphones on as like to be fully aware of surroundings when running.

Last year I did the virtual and the app was behind on distance to my Garmin. I know of one person that didnt run the extra and he had to run the extra bit a few hours later as the app didnt show he had completed it and wouldnt get sent the medal. I wish I was running it this year but after my dance with fire I am only at about 5km. I have got a place for 2023 so I should be ok for that! Good luck to all those running! 1

Yep I have seen people say that from last year, prob what I don't need, lol. I was doing good pace for 20miles (jus under 9min/mile) before had the dreaded C word in April 2020 and that was an undulating route. At the moment the 10min/mile is looking to be a challenge on a very near flat route.
MYK-IT Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 As both @Davit2005 & @hardtailstar mentioned, the app (last year anyway) did measure short compared to my Garmin but we did continue to run the 'app' distance to ensure the Virtual London 2020 Marathon was completed! As with all things GPS, there's always variations of recorded distances but I think more so for the app, as to maximise the device's battery life the GPS locations were only taken every minute or so (as compared to a Garmin which can be every second). That is why it was recommended to not run a route that included many turns / change of direction within a short distance. We are running the 'real' London 2021 Marathon this weekend... quite daunting, as in COVID and travel arrangements etc. Whilst they are claiming that everything is in place to ensure it will be as COVID-safe as possible... stipulating that 40k+ people must attend the Excel Centre (from yesterday to Saturday) which isn't the easiest place to get to, to get your run number and bag drop...I am not quite sure of. Great Run did a great job for the Great North Run a few weeks back, and had more runners - so here's hoping London will be similar. Best thing we did for virtual marathon last year, was had a friend follow us in a car, containing flask of tea, snacks, water etc. meeting us every 5km, or so. Certainly helps if you struggle to run by yourself and missing the crowds of the 'real' event. Best of Luck to everyone! 1

Cant think of my 20 mile time or Virtual marathon time off the top of my head but I pulled a muscle in the virtual marathon which completely tanked my sub 4 hour time goal. Aiming for sub 4 hours in 2023 haha. My last 5k time was 33 minutes which isnt bad at all considering my best was around 25 minutes and that I was burnt in October 2020! 1

I was raising money for UK Scouting last year so ran between Scout huts in my town. Had fellow leaders that had drinks and food for me. Was best decision I made too as it was good to see people I hadnt seen in a while! Edited September 30, 2021 by hardtailstar 3

My colleague got a place with his Girlfrend this year (8th attempt of trying for him,) I'm glad he got a place and I did not. Breaking up the run with a gel every 6 miles then have a 1.5L hydration pack that with have Electrolyte tablet in and a second collapsible water bottle. Used to doing distance by myself so not really worried about, wearing the bib so may get a few cheers I'm guessing :-) 2

I did a 10km run yesterday and saw one virtual runner, clapped and cheered him and got told to bugger off! Think he was a bit in pain by the way he was running! 1
Davit2005 Posted October 5, 2021 Author Posted October 5, 2021 Done a small 5k-ish this morning to test the legs. Still a bit like jelly a few moments early in the run then pace increased once in the second wind. 3
MYK-IT Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 (edited) How did you both do? My partner did brilliantly, considering she was (and still is) suffering with cold and asthma for past couple of weeks; to the extent even struggled walking long in London day(s) before. (We didn't want to go on underground, COVID etc). Guiding her was challenging (as she's visually impaired) due to narrow / congested areas and resulting in zig-zagging trying to get through people suddenly stopping during the second-half (as clearly a majority of runners weren't honest about their estimated times, to obtain an earlier start time). So it certainly didn't flow as fluid as it did for Great North Run. Was as nice touch to put braille on the finishers' medal, just as shame they couldn't accommodate for VI runners (with guides) better like having earlier, or dedicate start wave(s). Much easier for people to run past us, as we are tethered and clearly marked as a Guide Runner, than vice-versa. Plus upset BBC stopped their finish line red-button live-stream coverage before everyone had finished, it's not all about the elites... Edited October 5, 2021 by MYK-IT 2
Patrick Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 I run 5K in around 25 minutes, and my furthest run is probably 7 miles. I run to help in my other sports, but how you guys run 26 miles is awesome. 1
