TwistedHelixis Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 Just wondering what is best, Should the teachers archive the Google classrooms from last year or just delete the old pupils? This is for a single form primary school
rogerdnixon Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 We archive classes. Then make new classes which works fine. You can reuse assignments from any of your archived classes when you set assignments. Just let Wonde get on with it really. 2
paulkerton Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Archive all the way. Ours are synced from the MIS, so I have no doubt there might be a level of class reuse rather than re-creation from that... but archive is absolutely the way you should go! 1
Oaktech Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 We Archive for 12 months and then delete the oldest after 12 months.
timbo343 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Im glad someone else asked this as i was wondering what others do. We sync our classes from Bromcom and the new classes are set to sync from tomorrow once we push the button to sync. We have a Bromcom sync account which as access to all the classes which we use for checking the classes to make sure any queries regarding class lists are correct. If we use this bromcon sync account to archive the classes, how do the teachers of that class access the old documents / resources that were used from last year? I am also going through an renaming all of last years classes on Classroom and pre-fixing them with 2020-21 *classname* so we know they were from that particular year. This is all new for us as we started using Classroom last september so trying to know what is good practice and what isn't is something that is new to us.
rogerdnixon Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Teacher can still access archived Classes - they are in the side menu under archived classes. They can also unarchive them - which I do for my Y12's going into Y13 for example. You can lso just reuse an assignment and pick from any class including archived classes. Archiving does nothing to the files in the teachers "Classroom" folder - I have years of class folders in my Classroom folder. Just keeps things tidy archiving classes. 1
timbo343 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Next question, is there a quick way to rename all the old classes to prefix with [2020-21] and then move them to archive. Doing them all one by one is taking forever!
rogerdnixon Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Use GAM to batch do them. So: gam print courses todrive That will get a list of all the course and their IDs that you can download as a csv file. Then: gam csv nameofcsv.csv gam update course ~courseid status ARCHIVED gam csv nameofcsv.csv gam update course ~courseid name ~newname Where "courseid" is the column header for the courseid and newname is whatever you want to change the name to. Just Google GAMADV-XTD3 and you can download and install on a machine to get commandline goodness. However, if you are using Bromcom - then it should do all of this for you.
timbo343 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Cheers, ive got GAM already and nearly finished renaming so will use it to archive.

On a alightly unrelated topic, how do you secure Gam as according to the video below , if someone is able to access the computer where GAM is installed, it would be very easy to copy GAM over to another machine and use GAM without any authentication being done on the new machine.
Simcfc73 Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 I use Classroom Manager addon to sheets as well as GAM. I stupidly gave staff the option of keeping their classes or archiving them so its been a bit of a pain.
paulkerton Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 Next question, is there a quick way to rename all the old classes to prefix with [2020-21] and then move them to archive. Doing them all one by one is taking forever! There is a tickbox in Bromcom that will add the year as a suffix for you.
