NEW VM - PRINT SERVER - KYOCERA (mostly) - Best Practise?

In order to move my print server from the DC, I have somehow managed to create my first VM (YAY, GO ME!)...

 

Now as I haven't looked at printers, drivers, sharing, as it's been working just fine for about 8 years (so going to make a fool of myself, but please excuse any ignorance/ incorrect terminology) - I'm looking for best practise.

 

There are a load of settings I'm going to have to deal with moving over such as print accounting, but for the basics:

 

Installing drivers on the server

1. V3 or V4...?

1a. Or just the Universal driver?

1b. PCL6 or XPS...?

 

Adding printers on the server

2. Share this printer (do you have to 'share' the printer?

2a. Render jobs on clients?

2b. List in the Directory?

2c. Spool or Print Directly to the Printer (although I've just noticed that 'Direct' is not available on my test machine with V4 drivers)...

 

Deploying

3. Script, GPO, GPP?

3a. Shared Printer, TCP/IP...(can you deploy the printer by IP if it isn't shared, if so why does it need a path in the GPP)?

3b. Anything else?

 

I know I could muddle through and get it all to work somehow, but is there certain things you should/shouldn't/must do?

Just to move the print queues over you can backup and restore config using Print Management it creates a file.

 

When it comes to third party accounting it all depends on what you are using but you will need the queues. Then be a case of updating your GPO's to point to new server, if using accounting each device may require config changes all depends on what is setup and how.

Wasn't sure if I wanted to replicate what I have (even though it works well) or start fresh and maybe update a few things and tighten it all up a bit...

What I've done in the past is tidy up any current print queues, removed any drivers not needed then done the export, trust me reinstalling loads of printers is soo boring and tedious, likely to make mistakes too. If what you have got works use it.
