BBC iPlayer detecting us as outside the UK

Good morning everyone,

 

Just had a teacher tell us that they are having issues with the BBC iPlayer. It's telling them that it thinks we're outside the UK.

 

I've tested on my PC and get the same.

 

 

Is anyone else getting this too? We can't disable our proxy, for obvious reasons

Our ISP has us as UK. It's because BBC have changed something and we're behind a proxy, it doesn't like it.

 

We think the BBC are clamping down on being able to view content from different countries, via a VPN

 

Anybody got a suggestion how to get around this?

We're behind a proxy (Smoothwall) and we can access BBC services OK. Your IP address is being detected by the BBC as not being in the UK and that is the problem not that you're using a proxy.

We've noticed our Smoothwall needs an update. So will do that overnight. If there is still an issue we'll contact SWGfL in the morning.

We had the same back in early June (7th)

 

We opened a support ticket with Smoothwall the same day.

 

TEN Days later we had this response!

If the BBC see lots of traffic form a single IP they have an automated system to ban that IP. This is to combat VPN connections from overseas.

 

I am not sure what the threshold is though.

We had something similar, we were flagged by a few services such as iplayer and itv player (we also have a residential component).

 

It worked on our main internet line, but as soon as people load balanced to the secondary line it would block them. Our IP was coming out in london and was peered directly via the LINX and LONAP exchange.

 

Our ISP said that previous to them owning the IP and subsequently assigned to us, it was most likely associated with a VPN service. So they whitelisted the IP in the end.

To add to this.

 

I just used a VPN and connected to the UK. Google showed it as being in the UK. BBC iPlayer shows the exact messages as posted in the original message.
