DIY NAS RAID 5

Wow, a lot of abbreviations there!! After pricing up an off the shelf solution it works out cheaper for me to buy 4 x 300GB SATA (II) heavy duty hard drives , an Adaptec 4 channel SATA RAID card and a decent Intel GB server NIC.

They are to be fitted into an old video editing PC with an Athlon 2600XP and 1GB PC400 RAM. The server will be used for archiving and storing media content. What only remains is to decide what server OS to use and configuration. Any suggestions?

Not to be bias (*coughs a fair amount*) I'd have to say 2003, tho I dont have any real exp of other server os' - except NT 4 and a mild amount of linux & netware 4 and below.

 

Cheap enuff to us in edu & select licensing really

I'm favouring the Linux option myself. I'm currently installing Fedora Core 4 to the base hardware (mobo, etc) and am going to test it out for stability before installing the hard drives etc.
