Got need NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE, want to get Intel 11th gen processor and.....

Hi all,

I have recently purchased NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE and as my current spec is very weak for such a good graphics card I want to get a new Intel 11th gen processor for which I need a new Motherboard and maybe RAM as well?

My Current spec is

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 Intel Skylake ATX

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0GHz

Graphics Card: NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4

PSU: RMi Series RM1000i 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular

PC is being used for gaming, Internet browsing, watching movies.

Questions:

1. Which Intel 11th gen processor should I get?

2. Which gaming motherboard should I get?

3. Should I get new RAM as well? I want 16GB, any advise?

I have already spent a lot on new graphics card and PS5 as well so do not want to spent a lot on those if possible.

Thanks in advance

Also my monitors:

the main one is Acer ConceptD CP3271KP 4K UHD 144Hz 27" which I use for gaming and also have 2 more, regular 24"

Actually is this 10th gen would be a good choice for me?

Intel Core i9-10900K Desktop Processor 10 Cores up to 5.3 GHz Unlocked LGA1200 (Intel 400 Series Chipset) 125W

Without better context all of these questions are pretty impossible to answer. It's the same type of "how long a piece of string" kind of question

Why would any 10/11th gen be good for you compared to what you have now? What are you running? Games/Software? What is your current machine struggling with? Are you running out of RAM? etc etc etc

Hi Steve,

I play World Of Tanks online and then any other newest single player games like Call of Duty, Doom, Horizon Zero Dawn, Fallout, Just Cause etc. and browsing Internet, watching movies, do not use any heavy video editing software.

I want to use my current computer to the best of what 3090 can give me, better fps in games at least.

I still can use my computer just ok with my current spec but as 3090 is a top spec graphics card and the rest of my components are obviously not and I want them to match up a forget about upgrades for another 3-4 years.

Hope all this helps.

If you're getting a new board and the latest generation CPU you're more than likely going to need new RAM, depending on if your new motherboard supports the same RAM as your old board (I can't remember if gen6 is DDR3 or DDR4). Even then you're likely to want faster (and more) RAM on this kind of system.

I went with an i7-10700F and 16GB RAM on an ASUS Prime Z490 board for my system around Xmas (with a RTX 3060ti). You'll want a decent SSD in there too plus a decent PSU.

AMD's Ryzen 5000 series CPUs would give you way better performance in most games compared to Intel's CPUs. Intel has narrowed the gap slightly with 11th Gen, but even the 5600x is ahead of the 11700k, while drawing much less power in the process. Intel is still using a 14nm process (the same as your current 6700k), all they've been doing in the last 4 years is adding more cores and pumping up the clockspeed (causing the higher power consumption).

I myself use a 5950x (16 core, 32 thread) with a RTX 3070 and it flies! Most of the time I'm at less than 50% utilisation, but some games (BeamNG drive is one example) can make more use of it. Under full load, the CPU can use around 180 watts but this is less than the 10900k (250 watts) [source]. It seems that the 11700k isn't much better..

Here are some benchmark results which may help you decide:

Either way you go, you'd probably want to buy newer RAM. Your current DDR4 RAM would work with Z490/Z590 (Intel 10th/11th Gen) or B550/X570 (Ryzen 3000 & 5000) motherboards but you'd be leaving performance on the table (especially with AMD, Ryzen likes fast RAM - 3200MHz or faster is recommended)

Thanks a lot, now I am deciding between Ryzen 9 5900x and 5950x , any good gaming motherboard for those out there?

There are a lot of great options out there, using both B550 and X570 chipsets, but what you choose is really down to your budget & how much expansion you require. B550 boards are often cheaper than X570 boards, but the X570 chipset has more PCIe lanes. In real world terms, the extra lanes normally mean that the X570 boards have more available USB 3.2 ports, while some also have more M.2 NVMe slots.

I don't have a need for the extra PCIe lanes, so I use an ASUS B550-A Gaming motherboard in my system. I wouldn't recommend you buy this however, since it's Intel i225 ethernet port is affected by a hardware bug that causes dropouts. (This bug isn't specific to my motherboard, it affects any motherboard that uses the Intel i225 chip). I worked around the issue by using a spare PCIe ethernet card, but I'd recommend you buy a motherboard that includes a different ethernet chip instead.

The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk is a motherboard that seems to be well reviewed and doesn't use the Intel i225 chip (it uses a Realtek 2.5Gb ethernet chip instead).

Gamers Nexus has some recommendations for good B550 and X570 boards on their channel (but they don't mention the Intel i225 issue, so just be sure to confirm whichever board you buy doesn't include it!):

Sorry, you've bought a 3090 which isn't really practical for gaming, are complaining that the budget is tight, but have settled on a 5900x? And you are playing old games like World of Tanks? This is either a troll or a really weird attempt at flexing over getting a 3090...

thanks for all your replies, I have managed to grab AMD Ryzen 9 5900X Processor for only £445 so now need to decide on a motherboard and some RAM.

Do I understand this correctly, if the board is AMD then it will support Ryzen 9 5900x ?

Nope, just like all motherboards, you need to check it supports the processor, as not all do.

If you use PC Partspicker it will give you an idea of compatible components (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com) select a AMD 5900X as the CPU so you can look at what Motherboards/RAM it suggests, but still double check the specs on the suggested item as in the past some AMD boards required a bios upgrade before the newest CPU can be used with it.

And if you got a 5900X for "only" £445, that is interesting as most places are either out of stock or north of £500 at the moment.

does this seem ok? Gigabyte B550 AORUS PRO AC ATX Motherboard for AMD AM4 CPUs

actually it is still available at Italian Amazon and this seller sends to UK https://www.amazon.it/dp/B08164VTWH?tag=partalertit-21&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1&smid=A11IL2PNWYJU7H

You mean by a seller with 0% feedback in the last 12 months? That's also got every feedback saying they're cancelling orders and asking for bank transfer as a scam...

Reported to Amazon. Cancel orders and then ask to pay by bank transfer! It is a scam! don't buy!

order canceled due to payment. Probabilmete a scam as and all day they insert the same item at lower and lower prices.

After not even 24 hours the seller sends the email with the cancellation of the order asking to pay by bank transfer to a bank account not via amazon. This is ... Read more

The order was canceled by the seller, he asks me for a bank transfer to reactivate the order ... by doing so they manage to scam you by exiting the Am customer guarantee ... Read more

Product NOT WORKING! MADE MANY ATTEMPTS BUT IT DOESN'T WORK

I really think you need to start doing some research on items here, and not just buying things that look cheap and sound good about... If it's that just cheaper than normal there's probably a reason

I agree, but never a problem to get the money back

That's scalper pricing. €876,22 is about £745, over £200 than MSRP for that processor. You're feeding the problem buying it from sellers like that.

it was like 400 euro, but it was a dodgy seller so they've probably been banned.

Steve, it was cancelled :) so keep monitoring the market

Saw this on HotUKDeals - it's a bundle of a 5900x and an ASUS PRIME B550M-K motherboard. It's not the most feature-rich motherboard, but will support the 5900x and doesn't include the problematic Intel i225 ethernet chip.

Based on the comments it seems to be around £50-£100 over MSRP, but considering the current 5900x stock levels, that's not bad at all!

good find, thanks for that but I also have an audio card and a wireless card( just in case ) so I think my wireless card might not fit next to this 3090 monster

I got my AMD5800 in an AWD bundle before Christmas (at the time was actually cheaper than buying the board, CPU and cooler for amazon/rrp prices). Be warned, AWD do have reported a tendency of offering items as "in stock" without actually having the components in hand, in my case it was a modest 6 weeks or so between ordering and getting it due to them not being able to source the CPU.

Hi all,

I am a bit too tired deciding on which processor to get, different people advise different stuff.

I have been looking at these:

Ryzen 5 5600X 6 core, 12 threads

Ryzen 7 5800X 8 core, 16 Threads

Intel i7 10700K 8 core, 16 threads

Intel i9 10900k 10 core, 20 threads

Are they any good? Is i9 10900K the best out of those as it's got 10 core and 20 threads? Will those match up my RTX 3090 performance?

Thanks

It very much depends on what you're doing, and what resolution you use. I assume gaming, but are you looking at streaming, video encoding, a bit of cryptocurrency on the side?

When it comes to gaming, the lower your resolution the more pressure is put on the CPU. At 4k you'll probably be more GPU limited than CPU even with a lower end CPU, while at 1080p even 10900k would probably be limiting your FPS.

From my experience the R7 5800X doesn't bottleneck at 1440p, and does seem to be the current gaming sweet-spot form a price/performance viewpoint.

Wanting to stream or encode does make a case for a beefier CPU. For streaming the you'd want the extra cores as your running multiple programs, although 8 cores is probably fine.

If you want to eek every last scrap of power out of the 3090, then Ryzen 5000 series gives you access to PCIE 4.0 which does give a marginal performance uplift to the RTX series GPUS (although barely enough to be worth mentioning).
