Ever since I started purchasing iPads in 2015, we've been using Lightspeed MDM for the configuration and deployment of apps and Apple VPP for the purchase of apps. I have never used DEP.

We've received 20 odd iPads from the DfE so I've set up an Apple School Manager account and added the reseller so I can see the devices. I've also linked the MDM to ASM.

My question is, if Apple VPP is being closed down, how can I purchase and deploy apps for my 30 odd non-DEP iPads? Apologies if the answer is obvious, but I'm still not 100% sure how the various platforms relate to each other.

A quick breakdown for you...

VPP was Apple's portal which allowed schools to buy content and apps in volume, this is replaced with Apps and Books. In order to use this you need to set up an Apple School Manager account.

Apple School Manager is Apple's portal which in simple terms does the following;

Allows you to buy content and apps in volume;

Create accounts and school owned Managed Apple ID's for people;

Allows to you to automate and deploy Supervised iPads and Macs

You need an MDM in order to;

Deliver restrictions and payloads, settings and policies, content and apps

To allow you to use the existing VPP account in Apple School Manager to need to invite that user into Apple School Manager, support guide for this below

It says I can't use login to Apple School Manager with my VPP Facilitator account. If I create a new ASM account and invite the VPP Faciliator, will it bring across all of the purchased apps, etc?

When you invite a VPP account and that person accepts the invite the account gets created then, you don't create an account first.

As long as you have moved the VPP token in your MDM from Apple School Manager all your apps should come across.

Finally got verified for ASM, after many hurdles.

Do I need to invite the VPP Facilitator? It was me, and I am now the Apple Manager too.

In other words- does it migrate anything useful or is it just to give the Facilitator access to the new platform, if they happen to be a different person?

Next job is to sort out a token with Mosyle...

If you want to use existing purchased apps then you will need to send the invite to the VPP User (You) This creates a new account that you enrol into in ASM. You will need to move the token you have for VPP into Apps and Books.

Tried to invite the legacy VPP Facilitator but it says 'This Apple ID cannot be invited.'

Does it need to be the VPP Manager instead?

Is the email address different from your ASM login?

If it’s the same then you’ve already done this, or the VPP account you are using is a manager account, try the other account?

Yeah, it's a different address to the ASM login. It's definitely the Facilitator account I'm trying to invite - it has 'facilitator' as part of the address. I've got another address for the VPP manager.

Could it be that the email is @gmail.com instead of our school domain? The Faciliator Apple ID was created before we set up our current domain.

No it can be any email address that you use in the invite box.

It could be that the original VPP Faciliator account was created Pre February 2014, these accounts can only be moved into ASM by Apple. If you have no paid for apps that exist in the VPP account then it's not worth the hassle, you can just buy them again in Apps and Books.

One other thing that can trip people up is you need to ensure you have added your VAT details into Apps and Books in ASM.

Yes, it was 2013 that the Facilitator account was created. We do have some paid apps in VPP, so I'll have to go to the hassle of asking Apple to move it. :rolleyes:

Have you started to look in to contacting Apple to arrange this yet as we need to do the same as well. I tried contacting them via the Business and Education Support contact form and received an automated email with a case number then promptly forgot about it, but over a month later I have not yet had any reply from them. Have you had any success contacting them a different way?

Thanks

Some success contacting them, but they've not fixed the issue yet.

When we had issues with verification, someone called Yann emailed me from the address [email protected]

They've been quite good at replying but it's currently with the engineering team to find out why I can't invite my legacy VPP account.

The whole process has been ridiculously long. Considering we've been forced to switch from VPP, it should have all been automatically transferred across.
