Best chromebooks for primary school student

Hi,

With schools out, i wanted to buy my daughter a chromebook for home learning and to give her a bit of a head start.

She is at KS1 level and i know her primary school use chromebooks/google classroom etc.

I wanted to give her a typical setup to what she will use in school in terms of both hardware and software.

Could you guys and girls give me some guidance on what chomebook hardware/software a typical primary school setup would be running?

I havent been a NM for about 5 years so a bit out of the loop.

We have a batch of Acer Chromebook 311 in our lower school. They do exactly what they are asked of.

Hardware: our most recent batch of Chromebooks are the Asus C213 - flip-book style, so you can bend the keyboard all the way round to turn the device into a tablet, complete with world-facing camera. They have built-in stylus support, too, so you can use them for handwriting. Those are a couple of years old now so there's probably a newer model now, although Chromebooks tend to be a bit tricky to get hold of right at the moment due to supply issues.

 

As far as software goes, the nice thing about ChromeOS is that you don't really have to manage it much, it just gets on and keeps itself updated. Depending on what your daugter's school's setup is like, as soon as she logs on to the Chromebook with her school account she should get the school's setup - any filtering or installed apps should just sort themselves out, nothing for you to do.

I can't actually speak for primaries, but one thing that might be useful to know is that Chromebooks can run Android apps now. This can make having a touchscreen/2-in-1 a bonus as your daughter could use it for other educational apps, rather than just as a laptop.

We have Samsung, HP and 1 x Lenovo and haven't had any complaints.

Out of the Dell, HP and Samsungs we've had, they're all much of a muchness usage wise but the Dell and HP appeared far sturdier and therefore IMO more suited to the younger users, plus both had far better connectivity than the Samsung. Samsung's biggest letdown was lack of connections (which could actually be a benefit for younger people who might poke things) but only having the single USB-C for charging was a letdown.

Is there any software/apps recommendations that she may use in early years? She hasnt used them at school yet and is very confident with her ipad, just want to give her some exposure and a bit of a head start

My KS1/2 schools have had Acers, Asus(es?) and one has just had some Samsungs from the DfE. None touchscreen or tablet-able. So far, they all seem pretty much the same. Might be worth seeing what the school provide - if they use touchscreens in class, she'll expect to be able to do that at home. Otherwise, in my limited experience, the brand names all seem fairly equal. I'm going to jinx it now, but the Asuses were past their update date a while back and are still going strong and all of them are still in use.
